I used to have an Allsop stand that would collapse and store in the bell while in the case. I remember it being very flimsy and a bad design.
Have these improved over the past 40 years? The only one I have found is the Hercules, but it has 4 points of contact on the floor which I think would be unstable. Does anyone make a stand that has 3 points of contact?
I’m curious if they are any more stable today.

The 4 legs doesn't bother me. I only use it indoors, on floors that are flat. I wouldn't trust it out on a lawn.
K&M makes one. I think it's about as stable as the Hercules.
A new one on the market is from woodwinddesign.com. I've read good reviews, but haven't seen it in person.

I've seen the woodwinddesign by a colleague at a couple of gigs. It's a great and stable stand. They have some YouTube videos on the stand as well.

I got one myself for my birthday a few days ago. Haven't used it yet but I'm looking forward to use it!

While expensive, if you can afford it, these are great and pay for themselves in how light they are

+1 for the Woodwind Design stands. Been using the bass and tenor ones for a few years and love them

We had a roundup post on inbell stands not that long ago. Try the search if you are interested in more variety. Also does any place actually have the Woodwinddesign stand in stock?

I can vouch for the fact that the K&M is terrible. The leg spread is great, but the cone is fragile. I had mine break and I only used it with a Martin Imperial (small bore) trombone.

I've seen the Hercules and it looks nice. Being used with a symphonic tenor with F-attachment. That's an indication that it's pretty strong.

For a while, I thought the K&M had a terrible reputation. Then I realized Bruce just tells his story whenever he can, and I've read one negative review too many times. His broke. Mine hasn't. (Admittedly, I don't use it very much.)

OF the two, the Hercules wins on this one. I did the math with leg lengths and number (three long legs vs four short ones), and the Hercules has a slightly longer triangle height. But it was close; maybe inconsequential.

I mean, it has a terrible reputation because it is a weak and flimsy stand. My hasn’t broken, but I don’t use it for anything larger than a small bore straight horn and I won’t even use it for that out in public if I’m concerned about the horn.

Interested in the woodwind designs stand, but that is a pretty steep price for something that I do not strictly need.

By the way, I'm not the only one with the same problem with the K&M in-bell. Christine Woodcock, posting as RedHotMama reported the same failure before me. If I was the only one with the problem I might not be as strong an advocate against the stand. Note that I have one of their non in-bell stands and like it very much.

I own 4 different inbell stands and don't use any of them in that capacity. They are just not well designed. (My day job is a product designer) either mechanically or in terms of product design / usability. I put my Yamaha practice mute in the bell instead. The Aida stand is light and compact enough to go in my bag.
