Music that is similar to....
Heya gang. I am wondering if anyone knows of pieces that are similar to:
"Intermezzo" from Cavelleria Rusticana
Sonate Pathetique, mvt. 2 adagio by Beethoven
Meditation from Thais
Specifically, these songs bring out a very romantic, nostalgic feeling, are somewhat sad, but beautiful. Also none are technically bombastic. They are also very very well known pieces of music.
Anyone have other pieces that hit those points? Particularly if they are well known pieces that I should already have heard about.
It doesn't matter if it is for orchestra, solo piano, harmonica or whatever, just that the melody is strong.

"Berceuse" from Jocelyn by Godard. I think Ed Madden has an arrangement for trombone and Band.

I have an old, old CD called "Dream Melodies". Just about everything on it would meet your description.
You can see a pic of the back cover listing the contents on this ebay sale.

Sibelius - Valse Triste
Erik Satie - Gymnopédie (there are three of them. 1 and 3 seem to be the favorites.)
Handel - Largo from "Xerxes" (originally a vocal aria but instrumental versions are popular)
Bach - Air from Orchestral Suite No. 3 AKA "Air on the G String"
Telemann - Viola concerto 1st and 3rd mvmts. (the slow ones)
Telemann - Trumpet concerto 1st mvmt
Pachelbel - Do i even need to name this one?
Vivaldi - more concerto slow movements than I could list or you could count.

La Maniere de Debussy...
Good recording of this on Prof. Peter Ellefson's new CD, "À la manière de Defaye."

The whole album is Defaye manières of various composers and then a piece by each composer. So, several good pieces in the vein your looking for.
