How about these YouTubes:
Kai Winding (Actually Bill Harris as pointed out by Marty in post below) with Lester Young -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bhql0clzqEM
Or Tommy Dorsey with Art Tatum from the film The Fabulous Dorseys -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzhnWPz_Y8I
Or Kid Ory playing a typical growled solo -

Nice videos Grah. The first has Bill Harris on trombone, not Kai Winding. I met Winding years ago outside the Brass Rail in Chicago where I was playing. I immediately knew it was not him in the video.

You are not going to believe this, but when I heard that superb solo, I said to myself 'that sounds like Bill Harris'. But the commentary below said Kai Winding and I thought I was wrong.

I love these old clips. Thanks for tracking them down. There are a couple of interesting things in there apart from the music. If I am not mistaken Tommy Dorsey is putting his trombone together at the start of his clip and he doesn't screw the bell section to the slide section. Friction fit?
The other thing is I love how the atmospheric lighting highlights the muscles in his embouchure. Solid muscle!

I thought the Bill Harris solo was very cool. So was the sax solo beforehand -- he seemed extraordinarily relaxed.
The older clips were fascinating. We can learn a lot by watching and listening to those guys.

Yeah! Impressive....
The top note's a G-flat (maybe a little more G-ish) , but still -- She can play the horn and she's kinda cute too!
Oh, and how about that bell? that looks like a sackbut bell or something.....

I must have been thinking of another video.........there's quite a lot of them and she sounds great whether on trombone, trumpet (sounding very much like Louis) or singing (like Billie). Some of the clips from when she was 9 or 10 are almost staggering in the maturity of her playing.

Did anyone ever find one of Kai Winding playing? I've actually got a pretty decent collection of his LP's now (along with JJ of course). I just tried youtube, but they were down for upgrades or something.

Yes without a doubt he can play the *** out of the trombone and is a true virtuoso. When Watrous did that stuff on "4th floor walk up" he made music too.

I hate to get off topic, but considering it is a cadenza, isn't that what he is supposed to do (trombone tricks and all the flashy stuff to enamor the audience)? I'm not defending it simply because I posted that video, but I'm truely interested...is there a line with the cadenza that if you cross it people start to consider it unmusical? (Hah apparently so!)

Plenty of dudes can put in hours acquiring the screech register, mulitple tonguing, multiphonics, a good sound. If this player would seek counsel as to musical taste and apply his steely chops to that, he'd have something a lot more exciting and less tedious to listen to.

Yes, the line he crossed is repeating a lot of stuff that is musically disjointed. He was just saying, "Listen to this, I've got monster chops".
Not much else.
Erling said it really well.

Youtube has brought the art of armchair criticism to a new height, that's all I can say. Consider the context- We have no idea what this clip is, who the audience is and so on. may well have been an excerpt from a HS band clinic at 10AM for all we know.
Point is to get what you can from it and move on. I mean- sure, if I play a cadenza, I'm gonna play my own stuff too. But can we just give the guy props for playing at a high level and working to engage the crowd?
I've seen a lot of questionable stuff posted on youtube- had a few gigs I was on recorded via cellphone and posted. You can imagine the sound quality..
My friend Peter had a backstage conversation taped and posted, nobody knew.. Was surprised to see the Fred Wesley clip earlier- Fred playing with studio cans on, wailing with no background music. Hopefully he knew he was going "live"..
really sketchy I think.
There's also a huge disconnect in the commentary- all these YouTube people feel entitled to absorb these random bits and take anonymous potshots from home, using whatever criteria they wish. I find it a little discouraging. It's a document; the guy wasn't working for some crusty audience of trombonists out on the internet, after all. Joshy's two cents...

Anonymous? Not exactly. I use my real name, my real picture, my real business web site URL, all that.
Of course we're entitled to say what we like. Some of us find that cadenza to be awesome, some find it to be of questionable taste, some a little of both, and we're exercising our right to discuss it. Since when did discussing musical taste become a big deal?
I don't know about this "armchair" business, either. Most of us are trombonists. Not "YouTube people" or "a crusty audience of trombonists out on the Internet".
You feel very free to express a low opinion of the forum members, Josh, and then you have the nerve to rebuke us for expressing our opinions?

Talkin' about the YouTube phenomenon in general on this, Bob- not necessarily about you or the forum-at-large.
Context is always an issue, even for writers when reviewing a disc.
But at least on a record, the artist has some control over the presentation. Not so with these videos...
As far as this discussion is concerned- yes, calling a happening player "without class," etc doesn't strike me as being constructive.
it's just derogatory & not at all about musical taste.
I probably should have been more specific in my remarks, however- so apologies.
Josh

I enjoyed Rick Simerly and Christian Lindberg, though I'm not sure it's a fair comparison, and each seem to have a captive audience, so each performance was good for me. I started out as a serious musician and later in life I got serious about becoming an entertainer. They are 2 separate skills, as separate as throwing darts and selling shoes. Rick Simerly is borrowing from Watrous but also doing some of his own thing and it was obviously entertaining to the people who were there. Like Josh said, we don't know the situation, but it did appear everyone left happy. We're all dirt and worms in the end. What more lofty goal is there in music, than to make some people happy, while awaiting exit from this mortal coil.
By the way, loved the Twinkle variations by CL. He is just incredible.

Some of the remarks about Mr. Rick Simerly may have been sparked by jealousy. The fellow has outrageous chops and we can all appreciate that -- I certainly do. He has all the physical tools to play whatever he likes.
Let's all wish him the best and hope we don't show up on YouTube when we least expect it.

WOW!!! Where did this guy come from?
The jazz scene in Hungary seems to be striving.
There seems to be a strong Carl Fontana influence there. However, he definitely has his own style.
Very smooth and so many ideas!
I loved the jump at the end!
