First encountered Andy when I was a young bass trombonist at a massed brass band concert in Oxford - must have been 1995 or so? At the time he was principal trombone at Kidlington band (always a bit unlikely as a combo - good band, but Andy was much better - later on, it was an honour to hold up the bottom of the section for him), and he played 'Czardas' as featured soloist. It wasn't quite this arrangement - it had a straight ending, and as I recall he took the final written high concert C up an octave... And not as a squeal either. He was just outrageously on top of his technical game in addition to having a silky smooth but well defined large bore sound. Inspiring stuff.

Incidentally, the same uploader (is it yourself, Chris?) has posted a track from the 1995 Kidlington band CD featuring Andy on Langford's 'Rhapsody for Trombone'. He absolutely owns it, adding all sorts of little touches to make it his own, including the most outrageously entertaining strict-time cadenza.

I have always been very fond of Dutch Swing College and their previous trombone players. Dick Kaart was a particular favourite. They were accepted as a part of the British Trad scene in a way that other European jazz bands never achieved - speaking as a Pom, of course.

Also they were one of the first 'Trad' bands to change their style to a more mainstream sound and nowadays are probably a shade more swinging that many of those old Traddies. Not that there are many of them left.

Kenny, Acker, Humph, Alex - all gone. And of course Peter Schilperoort also gone from the Dutch Swing College way back now.

Bert Boeren no longer with the band and is more of a teacher these days although he still plays some very nice modern jazz. Here he is in 2013 - Solo starts at 4min:

Although I am not totally sure I did not prefer him when he was playing with the Traddies.

Andy is still going strong as a much in demand lead trombone big band player in London. Among many other bands, Andy plays lead 'bone in Pete Long's fantastic "Goodmen",featuring great old Benny Goodman charts ,mostly by Fletcher Henderson. This band is one of the tightest big bands of any genre going today, in my opinion. This band did a videotaped concert just recently in Taunton England and is available on "You Tube" under The Pete Long Orchestra. Old swing music played just like it should be. Pete Long is a great clarinet and sax player(all reeds).

I rather like this playing by Carol Jarvis, a lady who seems to have carved herself a substantial niche as a pro trombonist on the international arena. She has obviously mastered the art of getting herself well represented on the internet, possibly through sponsors, and almost rivals Trombone Shorty in this respect.

I still can't get used to seeing Jerry so much thinner. He really got athletic.

I think one of the guys in the back is Morgan Cundiff, a good player and super guy. David Miller is/was a regular sub with Cincinnati, in addition to his duties with the Navy Band. He's a fantastic player and a great friend.

Very nice Chris. WDR has always been a great swinging band and Shannon fills the seat more than adequately. She has a very good jazz trombone style which is not too pretentious and I love the animation when she is playing.

I also like the way she has used the internet in the last few years to get her name known in jazz circles. The ladies seem to be good at that, as I mentioned earlier about Carol Jarvis.

Wow, what a great sound, which you can say across the board with WDR big band, really top notch in every respect. The sound engineer also knows what the different instruments are supposed to sound like.

An excellent find with superb playing by Jack. It is a constant surprise to me that YouTube continues to supply wonderful trombone performances that I have not previously viewed. It certainly beats having to purchase the 78s, Eps, LPs, tapes, and CDs as we had to in the old days. The youngsters do not know how well off they are.

Which brings me to a video of the Chris Barber Jazz Band that I have just discovered. For those of you who do not know, Chris was a trombone-playing leader of the British Trad Boom of the late 50s and early 60s. I have often commented on this forum that Chris was originally one of the my major jazz trombone influences and it took me well over fifty years to eliminate him from my playing.

If I ever did.

Just for the nostalgia value, here is Chris with his band from a concert in France in 1964. This time was just about the end of the boom because the Beatles et al were then taking over from Trad (Traditional Jazz) as the preferred Pop music. I had made the transition to other influences - Teagarden, Trummy, Cutty Cutshall, Vic Dickenson etc. - but I still enjoyed listening to the British/European bands: As I do to this day.

Nothing to do with trombone players but this performance is also notable for the inclusion of Joe Harriott who was a Jamaican jazz saxophonist and composer, and much better known for his Free Jazz style. Definitely not a Traddy.

That sound is "big and fat"? I don't get it. I would describe it as airy, like he had a hole drilled into the side of his mpc. I'm not saying I don't like his sound and I'm not offering a critique where none was asked. He seems perfectly in control of it and I get that it's a sound prized by a lot of jazz trombone players. But of all the words in the universe, I would not pick "big and fat" to describe his sound. I thought he did an outstanding job and he is a wonderful player. So what am I missing here in the "big and fat" descriptors?

I had the same reaction to the sound but I soon realised it was probably air passing through the mute that was making that breathy tone. The hiss (or maybe it was a buzz) was then amplified by playing into a very close and sensitive microphone. I imagine that without the mute he would have a very full tone.

"Breathy". Yeah, baby! Now THAT'S sexy! Love that descriptor. Let me tell you something. If you're a guy and if you can play high, hard and fast - you make the other men say - "Oh wow!". But if you're a guy and you can play a ballad that makes the ladies cry, you have arrived. "Breathy" is one way.

I also think he is capable of a "full" tone as well. Why? Because I heard that his timbre (tamber, whatever) is pretty darn consistent, all up and down. Some play with a focused high and unfocused or fuzzy lower. That tells me the mpc they are using is too small to make nice in the lower/middle and lower ranges of their tenor horn 'cuz they value the high end too much. He sounded pretty well-balanced to this amateur's ear.

I was doing a small band arrangement of the George Gershwin tune "'S Wonderful", and stealing

a few ideas from the 1943 Artie Shaw Orchestra arrangement by Ray Conniff, when I came across this video by the revival Artie Shaw Orch, filmed by Doug Elliot.
