Some fav music websites and blogs
With the goal of trying to feed more discussion of music here, I thought it might be interesting to see what sites and blogs others are checking out, along with sharing some of my favs. Here are some:
http://urge2burge.wordpress.com/ is my latest and greatest discovery - "You Are What You Hear - a live jazz blog": a great library consisting only of live shows. I've listened there lately to Freddie, Mike Brecker, Charlie Haden, early Wynton
http://liebintervals.blogspot.com/
INTERVALS-DAVID LIEBMAN NEWSLETTER: Lieb has to be one of the great "thinkers" in jazz, and luckily he puts his thought into words here on his blog.
Portland Jazz Festival
http://pdxjazz.com/blog
The festival's artistic director, Bill Royston, is one of the most eclectic and experienced festival programmers and presenters in the world, and I like his tone and endless curiosity.
DO THE MATH http://thebadplus.typepad.com/
the bad plus blog and webzine is primarily the work of Ethan Iverson, the pianist in the trio, but he gathers many other forces and collaborators for a great read.
Darcy James Argue's Secret Society
http://secretsociety.typepad.com/
I firmly believe Darcy is going to be one of the major voices in large ensembles for the next decade+. If he ever loses his comp/arranging steam, he'd make one helluva writer/journalist.
http://www.artsjournal.com/rifftides/
Doug Ramsey's blog is a good mainstream source from a good jazz journalist.
I guess I've started with a rather narrow list so far, but I'll leave it to these to get the ball rolling.
What are you checking out?
Cheers,

For latin jazz, I don't know of one better and more frequent than Chip Boaz' blog, The Latin Jazz Corner:

Not a blog, but the only music site I check out with any regularity is, of course,
www.redhotjazz.com
Thousands of jazzrecordings for free, plus information on the musicians, pictures and videos.

Dialing up a little Teagarden as I write - thanks Mama. If I listen to x minutes of trad, can I get you to listen to x minutes of more modern jazz?
What do you think of John Allred's stuff? If you say anything about high or fiddly, I think I'll throw my computer through the wall.....but hey, your entitled to your opinion, right?
What else are you checking out in the great wide musical world? The musical blogosphere?
Here's another jazz blog with some good, in depth interviews with people like Jimmy Cobb, the featured artist up at the moment:
http://www.jazzwax.com/
Mama, you ever heard of Jimmy Cobb? Would you be willing to listen to some of his music with an open mind, especially since he played drums on one of the most famous jazz recordings of all time, Miles' Kind of Blue???
Go groove,
Cheers,

I'm not currently checking anything else out, Chip, and I'm not at all interested in blogs. However, if there was an informative and easily accessible site such as redhotjazz, offering the sort of music you mention, I might do so. Can you recommend any?

That's exactly what I'm describing here in this thread, though not necessarily in the format you describe. I hope you'll partake, not only as a musician, but as a hopefully well informed moderator on this fine forum.
Enjoy,

I've really been diggin this one lately, having read lengthy interviews on Pete Christlieb, Victor Feldman....digs into each person/musician much deeper than most any mag or site I can think of.
The present feature is on Bill Crow, the fine bassist/author.
Enjoy,

One of my favorite bands led by one of my favorite drummers, Brian Blade, is the featured live concert on NPR's series, "Live from The Village Vanguard". Check it out along with a long list of archived concerts, some even downloadable rather than just streamable.

So I bit on an email promo for Alice Russell - great blue eyed soul from England. But the bigger discovery for me was this site, fabchannel.com. It's all live shows in good quality from what I can tell so far, and from many genres.

I feel the need to share this link to a nice send off for one of the great Cuban bassists of our time, the nephew of the iconic Cachao - Cachaito Lopez. Here are five great recordings to check out as only an intro to this important figure.

One of my favorite sites for good radio-style interviews with decent sized music clips. I'm checking out the latest from Chick Corea, John McGlaughlin, and Christian McBride.

I've never heard the sound of Miles Davis' voice before he damaged his vocal chords, but this 1953 radio broadcast recording from St. Louis gives us another view of the enigma called Miles, along with a midwestern DJ's views and tone, for better or worse:

Do enjoy, and send out thanks for all the good notes Mike gave us while he was here.

I find it doesn't play through Firefox, though. I can't seem to quite get rid of Explorer...

Already mentioned elsewhere, but Dave Douglas' Brass Ecstasy is so killin, and captured in great aural and visual quality @ Josh Roseman's space.

Reviving this thread to share a link to live recordings from Small's in NYC - John Allred in duo with Ehud Asherie at the piano. Calling tunes as they go, it's so great to be able to hear John in this format thanks to Small's archives of live webcasts.
