"Growl" Technique

I need some advice as to how to develop a "growl" sound for the lead part in "Chicago". Some of the notations for a growl in the score are with a plunger, and some are not. Any advice?

Either flutter tongue with the tip, similar to a rolled R, or with the back of the tongue like the gutteral "ch" in Hebrew or other languages.

Plunger adds a wah-wah effect but the growl comes from you, as Doug says.

I engage the throat, and it took some time to figure out. Started with humming while playing and then changed the characteristic of the hum to be "throaty".

(I still can't roll my R's)

:idk:
