Hello.

I'm curious to know what people think of different counterweights.  What are your favorite, asthetically?

Here are a few of mine.

Yamaha "Batwing" counterweight:

Rath Tuning Slide Assembly:

The old H.N. White King weights:

What are yours?

My Martin Imperial has a solid bar as the tuning slide brace.  No need of a counterweight.

I don't have a picture, but I love the "batwing" weight on my Olds TIS.  It's huge and heavy.  I'll try to put in a picture.

You said sexy, so I had to look! Image. I have the newer King weight, but I like the old one better. But I won't spend the dough for another weight.

If I didn't have brace on my King 3b tuning slide, I would consider the Rath weight. Nice, open look!

Oh yeah, I love the torpedo weight.  Except when it gets loose and starts spinning.  The horn's not bad, either.

The old Reynolds "R" is pretty cool, but my favorite has to the the Olds trombone-playing bear.

Ive got an Olds Recording from early 1960s with no counterweight. Is it possible to add a counterweight to that?  Love the bear 'weight. Roughly how much would one of those cost?

Wow...can you upload some better pictures of this horn?  I'm very intrigued, but the aspect ratio is squashed.

Silver plated three piece King style from Brasslab. Looks like a 1950's King weight. Put it on my 80's 3B, looks so much better than the black one.

Functionally I love the King three-piece weights.

Aesthetically I like the off-center Olds weights, the Rath weights, and those sweet curly Minick braces.

And personally I'd like to have just a single solid sphere of metal where the TS brace would connect to the small diameter end of the TS.

58mark, looks fantastic Image Image! What's it made of? Heck, that whole end of the horn looks an awful lot like an Ambassador to my eyes.

It's a besson stratford that I stripped, used wipe on silver for the bell, and them put satin lacquer on

Another write-in - check out the hourglass-shaped counterweight that Edwards has designed for the new straight (no f attachment) version of the Alessi model. I do also like the old King counterweights, and the various modern ones that are based on them, like Shires and Brasslab models.

I'm into the simple stuff. I love the custom three piece weights like the ones from Brass Lab. Here is my old 42 with a custom 9 oz. weight:

I also really dig the "built in" weights on the new Lawler horns.

The Olds Bear is integrated into the bracing on those (very old) horns and not very heavy, either. Some versions have the bear back where the counterweight might be, others have it more forward by the player's ear.

Olds long ago made single screw aftermarket counterweights for Recordings, they are slick but hard to find. Here's mine, way back on the tuning slide:

Image

So you can keep an eye out for one of those if you want the authentic Olds Recording counterweight experience, or use similar offerings from modern makers (if they fit the post).
