Hi,

I'm a 'new' forum member and have been away from Trombone Chat or Forum (not sure which) for at least 10 years.

Can anyone recommend a practice mute known to fit the pBone mini Eb alto trombone? Sshhmute has a few different flugelhorn mutes, but I'm not sure which might fit. Other brands also considered.

A cheap experiment to determine if I might be able to play alto trombone/sackbut left-handed due to right-hand/arm mobility issues.

I currently play Baroque trumpet (no vent holes) and might be looking to branch out, if feasible.

Also, does T-bone Chat have a search feature? I can't seem to find one.

Normally, you'd need a few extra posts to get search access but this is such an organic question that I just overrode that, you can now search.

I doubt you'll find anyone who has a pbone mini AND a flugel mute though you might be surprised. How quiet do you need it to be? You might want to consider something with a little flexibility, like a softone mute. That can be utilized based on the diameter of the bell and won't matter what the taper of the bell is.

I used to use the pBone mini as my travel horn for vacation weeks when I would need to come back to the orchestra the next week. I used a Best Brass Practice Mute with it and it fit well. The Rejano Practice Mute is available for alto trombone - those are my favorite practice mutes, but I don't own the alto version.

Pampet mutes (through Amazon) sell trombone mutes for about $35 and French horn mutes for about $30. They might work, and they’re cheaper than the Best Brass for this type of experiment.

I have a mini pBone and a Renuzit mute.

I'm not sure renuzit is still made but you might be able to find something similar.

I had to add some self adhesive weatherstripping but it works very nicely.

I think french horn would be way to big no? Typically altos need a flugelhorn mute - and unfortunately the demand for both flugelhorn and alto trombone mutes is not particularly high

The Rejano advice might be your best bet, they appear to be pretty reasonably priced:

If you called up Dillon and asked them, they'd probably even verify it fits in a pbone mini before shipping

I am a big fan of the Rejano practice mutes. Lightweight, pretty small footprint, blows great, and good pitch. The new ones are made of a softer, slightly squishy material that should survive any drops to the floor as well.

Someone here has posted a digital file for a 3D printed practice mute.

I think it's parametric, so in principle you could easily adjust it for a mini.

Just about every library has 3D printers now, or you can probably find an elementary school child to print it for you.
