slide oil

Post by tim »

Does anyone still use it? I don't intend to, just wondering.

i know of nobody who does at least for actual playing.

I know someone who puts some sort of oil all over the inner slides if he's putting a horn into long term storage. I have no real idea on specifically why that might be as his reasoning is that it helps preserve it in storage. I do not know if this is actually beneficial or just something he carried over from oiling his carbon steel tools and knives.

It's what you give a beginner until you trust them with the maintenance regimen necessary with better lubes.

I don't, but might try the La Tromba P3 TROMBONE SLIDE OIL since my favorite valve oil is La Tromba T2.

If I sell a trombone to a beginning student who will be starting lessons in school, I include a bottle of slide oil and show them how to apply it without removing the outer slide.
My own private beginner students are told to get the Yamaha lube, and at their weekly lesson I swab the outer slide out while they wipe down the inner (under my careful watch) and have them apply it while I hold the slide, in approx. 4th-5th position.
Being an "old dog," I still prefer Trombotine or Superslick on my own slides.

I have heard that, in high humidity environments, slide oil can be preferable. Haven't used it myself since 1964.
