The great trombonist Shannon Barnett has spearheaded a terrific project called "The Hidden Trombone". She asked 7 trombonists to list 10 tracks of outstanding trombone improvisations, including on albums where the trombonist is not the leader. It's not intended to be a list of the most famous jazz trombone recordings, but rather a kind of supplemental guide that showcases recordings that students might not know.
I picked tracks featuring Kenny Carr, Al Grey, Bill Harris, Jimmy Knepper, George Lewis, Russell "Big Chief" Moore, Barry Rogers, Frank Rosolino, Roswell Rudd, and Trummy Young. It was a great challenge to try to whittle down and explain my picks.
The other trombonists/educators who participated were Nils Wogram, Shannon Barnett, Gunter Bollman, Kieran Conrau, Michael Dease, Johannes Lauer, and Paul Dunlea. Everybody came up with very different, personalized responses. There's a ton to listen to and learn from.

That's a nice project! Great job! Props to Shannon! Surprised to not see Glenn Ferris mentioned there tho :)

I always emphasize the importance of real listening in my teaching and I feel like my students often still don't get to the point of when they start to benefit from just listening to such recordings, so this is some more great repertoire to choose and learn from or being creative with it.

That's really an unbelievably fantastic resource.
I first met Shannon on an Artie Shaw band tour we both did in the 2000's and she has continued on a great playing career, and now this...
