Hi from the Practice of Dr. Trombone
Hi Folks,
Long time no post!! It's the artist formerly known as Euphanasia. I have a question for the Connsters out there.
I just purchased an oddity from Shopgoodwill.com. It's spec-ed like a Conn 6H, (.500 bore, 8" bell) but it has no model number stampings. The only designation aside from serial number is the number 29 stamped where I would expect to see the 6H stamping on the slide handle, and on the lower cork barrel at the tenon joint. Definitely 29, not 6h upside down. Maybe someone was having an off-day in the stamping room?
The bell is engraved:
C. G. Conn Ltd
Artist '
USA
It has the characteristic 6H nickel crook and outer slide sleeves, but the cork barrels mook more like they're from a Director. All slide braces are soft-soldered, and all bell braces are contiguous with the ferrules. The bell is yellow brass, and everything is covered in gold lacquer, so it's difficult to see what is nickel and what is brass.
I'm planning a refurbish and re-sell, but I don't want to describe it incorrectly. Can this accurately be described as a 6H?

I don't have an answer, sounds like maybe somebody at the Conn factory was having fun the day it was made, but it's great to see you here again - I've been wondering what happened to you after the switch to Trombone Chat.

That definitely looks interesting. The handgrip/cork barrels don’t quite look ‘6H,’ they look a little more ‘18H’ to me…
Maybe a 6H bell with an 18H slide?

I think that slide was modified. I don't know any Conn models that have a chopped upper cork barrel like that, including Directors. Some newer Director models have unequal length barrels, like the 22H, but they don't look like that. The 14H/16H/18H all had the same equal oversleeves as the 6H and 77H. The slide braces definitely look like 6H braces to me, the 77H and Directors have a simpler brace design.
Great to see you back!

That's where the slide lock is supposed to go. It didn't come with one, so I'll have to compare the original 6h ones with the director ones. It looks like it takes the director style.Finetales wrote: Tue Feb 24, 2026 2:43 pm I think that slide was modified. That early Abilene period has some wacky stuff. The bell could also be from a 5G Victor paired with a random slide.

That might have been a different listing. This one has a reversed tuning slide. And the 20H has a .485 bore. This one is .500.NotSkilledHere wrote: Tue Feb 24, 2026 4:05 pm i remember this listing actually. if im not wrong, the tuning slide is also not reversed. could be a 20h?
I was wrong about the site it was on. It was on ebay, and listed by the salvation army.

Found it. Apparently, it's an Eastlake Conn. I found a listing for a "Limited" version of the same horn with removable leadpipes. Mine has a fixed leadpipe. And it plays very well.

An 18H slide lock fits, but it's "clocked" wrong and it hits the slide lock tab so I'll have to shim it a bit. But it's good to know what it is.

29 is a very similar number to the serial on my 88H. A similar vintage I guess!

My 74H from November 1977 (GK7700**) has uneven length cork barrels and so has my later 36H alto.Finetales wrote: Tue Feb 24, 2026 2:43 pm I think that slide was modified.
