CarolBrass convertible trombone

I think most convertible trombones have their place. But this is a bit much.

I've played a few gigs where that extra couple of inches of clearance would have been handy.

Carol seems to just full send it with some bar napkin ideas. There's the trumpet that you can put in Bb, G, or F, there's the sax-shaped trumpet that you can also put in Bb, G, or F, there's the soprano trombone in G with a short flugel bell, there's the pocket trumpets with Dizzy bells and whatnot...they kind of just do whatever. No idea how it works as a business model, but here we are.

I just wish they got even MORE weird with it. Gimme flugelhorns in weird keys or G bass trombones or large bore sopranos with a valve or double bell trombones. Just fully commit!

Makes sense. I don’t think I would buy a new trombone just to fit in a pit unless it was a no horn, no job ultimatum. At the pre-tariff price, though, it might have been worth it.

I just looked some of these up. My first thought was "what in the Wild World of Sports are they thinking"? But then I thought about it and it's actually really kind of cool.

Not sure what the idea is with the sax trumpet though. I could see that being awesome during like a "moment" in big band, during the sax soli.

From what I've read via comments on the Carol Brass Facebook page, saxophone is enormously popular in Taiwan, and trumpet is not. So the sax-shaped trumpets are an attempt to get more home-market customers interested in trumpet.

No idea how true that is, but I could see it.

I've been wondering what happened to Carol Brass (a Taiwanese brass manufacturer).
Heard nothing since Don Rugg (who was a Carol Brass dealer) closed California Music Supply in Fontana several years ago? He endorsed their trumpets; trombones were pretty new then.

They're still cranking out new models, and they have a few distributors in the US.

Now, if the design had allowed for both the closed and open bits to be left out and it could stand in G…. Then at least we could have another reason for a G attachment thread complete with graphs.

As it is, if you are going to make a decent wrap that doesn’t protrude, just leave it at that. Don’t mess it up with a semi open wrap that loses the dump valve which is half the usefulness of the darned thing.

Cheers,
Andy

Or use both for Eb. I'd love a little pigtail loop for my Bach 42.
