I had three of these cheap, flimsy folding stands around collecting dust; with a 3/4" desk they can barely hold a pencil.
With boredom setting in while stuck in the house during yesterday's icestorm, I decided to try to make them useful with materials that I had lying around the house. Pics tell the result. The back is very stiff, thin cardboard, the desk was cut from a set of old plastic window blinds. The duct tape is obvious. An important part is the tabs on the back which go behind the lip on the desk to help hold it in place, and the cardboard top needed to be narrow enough to fit between the music holders on the stand.
Of course I have better stands, but plan to keep one of these in each of our 3 cars in case of a forgotten stand emergency. I'll have to check to see if they're sturdy enough to hold a stand light.
Just wanted to share my idea, with a little more effort and $ I'm sure improvements can be made.
I call it my Handy-dandy Folder Holder.

I find the $9 Manhassett accessory shelf does a good job stabilizing your average wire stand. It holds the left and right firmly together, and extends the lip another inch or so. That is all done by the part (plastic clamp?) that holds the shelf to the stand. I usually ignore the shelf itself.
