George Thatchers Bass Trombone Mouthpieces

I was saddened to hear of George's sudden passing which sounds like nobody was expecting. I personally did not know George but well aware of his musical talent and contribution to the LA music / film scene. His name is linked with some of the greatest film scores ever made and I'm sure he will be missed by a lot of friends and musical associates.

I'd heard via this forum that his Trombones and Mouthpiece Collection were going to be made available for sale via
Steve Ferguson @ The horn guys. I was very fortunate enough to buy a total of 5 of George's Bass trombone mouthpieces. I bought these as a memoriam to George so I could own something that was personal to him, but also knowing that will have used these on numerous Film scores.

I plan to have each one engraved with his name and timeline to honour him, so where ever these end up after I'm gone there will be a permanent record.

Those are some nice mouthpieces, with a great history. Are you planning to play them, or just keep them in your collection?

The history means an awful lot to me together with the fact that George was such a well respected and high profile Hollywood studio player ( and one of us ).

I did actually try a few of these pieces.

Ferguson L - Feels nice and big on the lips, plays as open as a Bach 1g but with a super warm commercial sound with nice edge when pushed and phenomenal range, I really get why George had this in his arsenal.
Conn 1 1/2g - This one also feels a lot bigger than a Bach 1 1/2g and does help to create a nice warm sound and great bottom range, I was pleasantly surprised by this piece.

These are definitely staying with me and my current collection of vintage pieces, I'm so happy to have these.
