Vintage B&S trombone

Post by Bombardino23 »

Hey there,
I've been looking all over the internet for any info on old B&S trombones (serial numbers, models, bell sizes, ...), but couldn't find absolutely anything. Anybody here know any website or anything that can help me??

The history of B&S is closely linked to the history of Germany. Before the reunification, it was a state-owned company in which many smaller companies were merged, and there was a reduced incentive for innovation and improvements. Instruments from this time can be good, but also just okay. After the reunification, the company was privatized again and has since undergone several changes in ownership, but generally, during this time, the focus was back on improving quality, and there were also many more modern models.

A good source for researching individual models is the 'Forum des Musikinstrumenten-Museums Markneukirchen' (https://musikinstrumentenbau.eu/)), where you can also find a brief article about the history of B&S:

'In the VEB Blechblas- & Signalinstrumentenfabrik, the major metal wind instrument manufacturers in the GDR were merged in 1953. The instruments were signed with B&S and produced in Markneukirchen. After the reunification, the VEB B&S was renamed Vogtländische Musikinstrumentenfabrik (VMI) and sold by the Treuhand to the TA Musik Group, a member of the medium-sized holding company TA Triumph Adler AG.

In 2001, TA Musik was sold in a management buyout to a group led by long-time industry manager Gerhard A. Meinl and renamed JA Musik GmbH. This company takes on the role of a management holding company for its subsidiaries in the woodwind and brass instrument sectors. In addition to B&S, the corporate group also includes the brands Meinl Weston, Antoine Courtois (AC), Melton, Hans Hoyer, Scherzer, and F. Arthur Uebel.'

After that, B&S was bought again and is now a part of the Buffet Crampon Group, together with many other well-known brands.

Here is the part where you can find out about serial numbers, models, bell sizes and so on. If you can't find anything so far just place a new request, there are some pretty competent mods there.
