Hello!
I have recently acquired a 1928 Conn 76h that's a .500/.525 dual bore straight horn. I <3333 love it, but the Yamaha 48 I use for everything doesn't slot right!
The Yamaha Nils Landgren is a 48 with a shank designed for dual bores, but in the unlikely event that doesn't work out, what are my other options? Dual Bore is tricky with the slotting.

I seem to recall Doug Elliott designing some shanks specifically for Dual Bore Horns, though I don't know if he had one specifically for .500-.525.

I used to have a Conn 32H , also 500/522 bore and My Mount Vernon7C worked fine in it.
Could you post a picture of the horn ? I never knew they made another horn with that configuration.

I was not aware that the Yamaha Nils Landgren mouthpiece was designed for dual bore.

Doug does not currently list a shank designed for dual-bore 0.500"/0.525" bore trombones.

My unlisted backbore 3.5 is for 500/525

Though I am newly coming back to trombone, particularly the dual bore 32H I recently acquired, I have had no problem playing it with a Schilke 47. I tried a couple of others, Bach 6.5AL, 1939 Bach 12 that came with the horn, larger Schilkes (51 (which I use on my bass trumpet), 52), but I have found that of this limited sample, I like the Schilke 47 the best. May learn differently in the future as I get more precise in my playing, but it is another point on the graph.

I would be very curious to hear more about how the various mouthpiece parameters affect slotting, etc., particularly on these dual bore trombones.

On my weekly Friday Night Big Band gig, one of the guys had just bought a 32H and brought it to the gig.
It played beautifully , just as I remembered .
Effortless upper range and some meat on the bottom of the horn . A little front heavy but that`s OK
Now I`m looking around the closet and thinking about what can sell and pick one up? Hmmmmm....?

Doug's 3.5 shanks are great.!
I had Yamaha 0.500-0.525, 8 inch bell intermediate horn and 4 shank seems like a bit too open, while 3 seems like a little bit restricting, maybe because the Yamaha had large bore-ish neckpipe and bell throat. And 3.5 was better than 3 or 4.
Although I sold the horn because the horn itself is somewhat dull. Thick bell construction, maybe because it is designed for school use, and that dullness is which I didn't like. I feel sorry that Yamaha don't produce pro level model with 0.500-0.525.
I have no idea whether the 3.5 work well with other duo bore horns though. Especially for Conns, I assume that neckpipe and bell throat might have been designed smaller than large bore counterparts. (which might be good thing for 3.5 shank, or not)

Yep, 2nd the 3.5. Works great in all the 500/525 horns I've put it in. Also was swapping between a 3 and 4 depending on the gig but the 3.5 I haven't switched once. FWIW I use mine in a custom King 500/525 but I suspect it would also work well in the 32H. The bell throat is not too dissimilar on mine from the Conns and I use a 32H pipe in my King.

I'll also support the use of the DE 3.5 shank. I use it on my Yamaha 456G with a E cup. Tried it against the 3 and 4 and like others found the 3 a tad tight and the 4 a bit open.

I’m glad to hear the D3.5 and E3.5 are working well on .500/.525 dual bores.
That’s what I designed them for, but I don’t have a .500/.525 to try myself.

In the guitar world that's GAS - Gear Acquisitioning Syndrome - and something that has to be constantly negotiated to keep in check. I know of some non-professional guitar guys who owns around 50-100 guitars just for the sake of it, but I've never heard of a corresponding thing with trombones.

What's the most trombones you've heard that anyone owns? I once knew a now passed semi-pro trombonist who owned like thirty different horns and I know a trumpeter who owns about sixty trumpets, and high as those numbers are they are not close to a hundred.

Well, I acquired this trombone from the largest hoarding of trombones incident I have ever heard of. This guy was in Columbus, Ohio and had like... 300+ horns in a basement... Wasn't even a player. He was renting too! He left everything and it took the guy who sold it to me... Like 8 months to clear it out!

So I did some research, and Doug's lessons made the biggest change in my playing career of any lesson I have ever had, but I can't afford the whole DE setup that I want...

I asked around and managed to acquire myself a Remington Constellation that was paired with several other dual bore horns and it plays very well! I tend to play pretty bright, and the mouthpiece/bone combo is great for me! And at $30, now I am pretty convinced that this combo works for now. I could definitely get a bigger sound, but I at least can play this combo now!
