I think the most darting and diving I have seen in person was Gil Shaham playing a Philip Glass violin concerto.


I presume this is something that has gone in cycles and that today's musicians are not the first to move while playing.

Contemporary descriptions of soloists like Paganini and Liszt suggest many dramatic gestures were involved and they were probably widely-imitated.
