Hey All,
I was finally able to convince Yamaha to make this horn for me. This is essentially a 891ZD with a trigger section. They made a few examples in Europe (maybe 5 or so) and I’ve wanted to get one made for a long time. It originally came as a one piece bell with the model number 892ZX stamped on it. It was just converted to a cut bell by Yamaha (which would technically make it a 892ZXD) and it sounds and plays great. The horn is super versatile and the trigger register on it plays really well. It’s smaller as you would expect but can sound really full with a mouthpiece change. Not sure if Yamaha will ever offer this setup to the general public but I think there would be a good amount of interest if they did.

Really nice horn! Hope Yamaha make it available to the public, although I doubt there is enough substantial demand to justify that…

But Yamaha can definitely use some smaller bore horn with valve on custom/Xeno level.

The lack of .508 bore trombones with valves blow my mind. I guess there isn't much of a market.

Meanwhile the King 3bf is known as one of the most versatile horns

For .508 and smaller horns, I think it would be useful to have the trigger be able to swap from F to G for even more versatility. The use for horns like this is not for pushing out low Eb's and D's. I think of it as a speed demon and keeping everything close.

I conversed with Yamaha about getting my hands on one of these a couple years ago. They shut me down.

Since I am not, and likely will never be, a Yamaha artist - I always wondered if I could get a group of X number of people (where X is high enough to get Yamaha's attention) who were interested enough to commit with some sort of deposit if they would spin up production for that many 892ZXs.

Please tell that to all the trombonists forced to cover or literally read bari sax parts on wedding and corporate gigs lol

I agree with the idea of a G crook though !

Yeah, wedding band bari parts (Proud Mary...) and Broadway books are the main reasons to have a small horn with an F valve. I have had to play COUNTLESS loud low Ebs, Ds, and Dbs on my 3BF in various contexts. But for most other things, including 3rd in a big band, a G valve would be a great option to have. Plus you only lose low Db with a G valve!

Yamaha will do anything for anyone if given enough money...but it has to be a LOT of money.

It's a nice thought though. Like consortiums for a new composition, but for a limited line of instruments. I suspect the horn consortiums I'd try to start would have no other takers.

As you know this has been my dream horn for a year and now that it finally exists I find myself happier with my 6H set up the same way. But I could maybe be swayed for this horn with a nice engraving and amber lacquer like the atelier special custom z tenor and alto

The interesting thing is almost every horn gig I’ve done recently had a low Eb in it and lots of places where I’m going quickly from A to B so the trigger had been getting lots of use. Funny how that works.
