Most focused bass trombone lead pipes
I’m currently considering using a NY Bach 50 slide as my main slide with my 42, but want to test a bunch of lead pipes before making that decision. I currently have a BrassArk MV50 on the way. Are there are other focused/tight bass bone lead pipes that would be similar to the MV50? (Note I’m a tenor trombonist) thanks

Edwards or shires 1. Mv50 is pretty tight.

MK Drawing also has a pipe based on a MV 50. That could be an option to compare.

You would be hard pressed to find a tighter bass pipe than the MV50 from Brass Ark. The M/K version is noticeably more open. FWIW, I have on good authority that a noted instrument maker measured the venturi of the BA pipe and found it to be smaller than some of his tenor pipes.

If you want REALLY focused, try to find a King duo gravis pipe. I think that's what I have...ex Phil Teele...king for sure...uber focused.

Re: Most focused bass trombone lead pipes
I have both Brass Ark MV50 (drawn red brass) and MK50 lead pipes (both nickel and brass). They have been great for me. I don't notice the M/K being more open. But I have found it necessary to shorten each of these by about 1/2" or so to get the results I want. Probably that's just me. On my cheesy Schiller 7B clone (red brass bell), the Brass Ark MV50 worked great for concert band, but the nickel M/K 50 worked best for big band. However, on my Getzen (yellow brass bell), the brass M/K 50 seems to be best. You need to experiment. M/K does, at least, have a trial and return policy.

Hopefully they were comparing T3 sized pipes to the MV50 and not more average sized tenor pipesBassBoneFL wrote: Fri Jun 13, 2025 4:59 am You would be hard pressed to find a tighter bass pipe than the MV50 from Brass Ark. Re: Most focused bass trombone lead pipes
When I use a Conn 562 slide on my tenor I found the GR 2 leadpipe to give enough resistance to make the sound more "tenory".. Don't know if it is the tightest, but I am sure it is up there!
