Thumb trigger rest with grip?

Post by BrianJohnston »

I’m wondering if anyone makes a thumb rest for the F-attach trigger that has a grip to it (the way the top of a skateboard does, or similar). I have one of the Edwards epoxy ones currently and sometimes my thumb slips from it. Any leads greatly appreciated.

Didn't French Horn players solder small coins onto the valve levers so that there was something for the fingers to grip onto?

Cheers

Yes, and some still do. A bass I bought from a repair tech—his experimental horn—had bent quarters for the thumb and finger paddles (touch plates, spatulas, thing-ammies, etc.). I think I still have them somewhere…

You can buy strips of texturized tape to apply to the paddles. Just cut to fit the shape.

I'm thinking that the slipping may indicate you don't have things adjusted quite correctly, but independent of that ...

I have found "waterproof foam tape" (I use the Walgreen's brand) to be very useful in a similar capacity: I use a few layers of it as a "slip-free cushion" for my left index finger on my Getzen bass. If you don't mind the appearance (an you're the only one who is likely to see it :) ) that might be at least worth trying. The stuff is amazingly stretchy and grippy.

Does "thumb trigger rest" mean the thumb is resting on the trigger, making the trigger assembly bear its weight? Seems like a bad idea to me.

My thumb can comfortably hover in midair, needing no rest at all.

You mean, like it becomes detached from your hand and ...

Okay, never mind that. :)

My thumb "rests" on the trigger, and my middle finger rests on the paddle. Losing contact with either of those isn't a good idea. It would be like playing piano by hovering over the keys instead of resting fingers on them, or playing flute the same way. You don't want detachment. You want contact without pressure.
