First, how high can you play now?
Second, how high do you need to play?
How much time do you have before the concert?
How long have you been playing?
Also, what are you playing: instrument, mouthpiece, etc.
Range increases are not instantaneous -- they take time. Sometimes an instrument or mouthpiece change can help, but it's always a tradeoff.

I wonder if this is the most often asked question from trombone players.

Yes it is, but followed closely by "how do I trill?"

Take it down an octave, then point a finger at the guy next to you.

Serious question by a young player. We could be more helpful.

A fair point.
I also think it's like the old cycling adage: it doesn't get easier, you just get faster.
My son started playing trombone last year, he's struggling with all the same things I do but at a different level. He's working on sound production, trying to improve his breathing, range, etc.. who doesn't work on these things every time they pick up the horn?
Hopefully we're all getting relatively better, but I don't think there's an absolute better.
Sorry, got a bit reflective there!

I remember, during the Maynard era, it was the
only question. Trumpets
and trombones.

I will refer the OP to previous observations I have made on the topic, which I believe to be helpful...
