Trombone "Chicago Style"

Post by JohntheTheologian »

Not sure if this is the best spot to ask this question, but i couldn't figure out any better place.

Yesterday in the car, my wife and I were playing a CD by Rosemary Clooney, one of our favorite jazz vocalists.

On that CD she sang a duet with Bing Crosby of an old Jimmy Van Heusen tune about a slick dressing trombonist who still played trombone "Chicago Style." Apparently Bing and Bob Hope first sang it in one of many "Road" films they did together with Dorothy Lamour.

My wife asked me what trombone "Chicago Style" trombone was. I told her I guessed it was just a way of saying traditional jazz, but I was wondering if there we more to that.

Is it distinguished from the tailgate New Orleans sound, the New York trad sound, or it something else?

I appreciate any clarifications.

I don't have anything helpful. I just wanted to point out that Rosemary Clooney was my babysitter when I was little, and then when we did a gig together with Harry James we talked about it and she remembered me as a rather pain in the butt child. :D

My only offer on Chicago style traditional jazz is that, yes it was less tailgate, but it also allowed for almost swing style counter-melodies by the trombone. But I'm not a big trad-jazz enthusiast, so probably others have better observations.

What fun to have Rosie as your babysitter. ;) Did she ever sing to you?

In my opinion she's one of the best American female vocalists. We own many of her CDs, spanning her career.

I don't remember. I was just a toddler.

Of course she sang to you.
