Gabe was acting-I was first sub. Long story but Covid and many other factors delayed the audition.BGuttman wrote: Tue Nov 19, 2024 8:03 am Wasn't this Gabe Rice's chair?
Good luck to all who auditioned.
Bruce I live in West Hartford, CT. YES I commuted to NYC for 21 years playing Phantom. LOLBGuttman wrote: Tue Nov 19, 2024 8:15 am That's still a pretty long haul for either of you (Gabe from the Boston area and you from NYC). Hope it pays worth the trip.
I knew Ed very well and subbed for him in his later years when he wasn't feeling his best. I even help his executor sell his equipment once he passed. He was a very sweet man.CalgaryTbone wrote: Tue Nov 19, 2024 8:59 am That's the chair that was held by one of my high school trombone teachers - Ed Foster.
Good luck to the applicants.

Great story Jim!CalgaryTbone wrote: Tue Nov 19, 2024 10:58 am The last time I saw him was at a Hartford Symphony Principal audition in my first year of school in NYC - 4 or 5 of us piled in a car and drove up to the audition (my first professional audition). Ed found me afterwards, and was just so happy about the progress I had made that year - a really fond memory for me. I also remember what was the best lesson anyone ever taught me - I had just taken my first college audition (Hartt) and had found out that I got in, and then didn't practice over the course of the week after. I still had a couple of more auditions to prepare. I showed up to my lesson, and within a couple of minutes, he realized that I wasn't prepared and he kicked me out and told me not to come back until I practiced, and reminded me that the next 2 auditions would be even more difficult. A really great "tough love" moment, that I never forgot!

Small world, Jim. Two of my first teachers used to sub with HSO, Steven Jackson and Wayne Johnson. Studied with them from 4th thru 7th grades.
