Used 3BF Valve Section?

What are my chances of getting a used 3BF valve section in working condition without buying the rest of the horn, and if it’s possible, what should I expect to pay? Any ideas? I’m thinking about adding it to my Butler JJ. It’s not strictly necessary, but it would give me alternatives to 7th position and extend my pedal range a little bit.

I replaced a valve section on my 3BF recently, and paid $200 for the whole gooseneck section without hardware (reused my trigger, valve cap, and tuning slides). Dave Butler has talked about his 3BF conversions, maybe that would be a more cost-effective way to get what you’re talking about here.

They come up very sporadically. I sold one a few years ago. I might have a 607F bell section I could part with. Depending on condition they can go from ~$150-500. And depending on how much else the person is willing to sell. I'll see if I can remember to check my basement this evening.

You might be lucky and find someone who has converted a 3BF into a straight 3B, IIRC I‘ve seen one or two people on here who have done that and sold the valve section.

That's a 1480, bit bigger than OP wants.

I’d be interested in learning more about this. Isn’t the bore size a little larger, though?

The bell section of a 607 is essentially all 3B parts. It's no different than a 3BF other than the straight bell brace, different slide receiver for the different slide tenon, and a different stamp on the bell.

Isn’t the 607 a 0.525 bore horn?

Yes, but other than the slide receiver it is no different than a 3B/F in the bell section.

The F tubing on a 3B is .530, which pairs quite well with a .525 bore slide. Benn made a "Franken36B" for me, putting a 3B valve section on a straight 36 bell, and it plays great. In some ways better than my actual 36B.

OK, thanks everybody. I’m looking forward to hearing what Matt K finds in his basement, and if he’s willing to part with it.

Oh shoot Aidan's right. That one is .493 bore vavles. I'm almost certain I have a 607F bell sitting here somewhere. I'll 2x check again.
