Jazz horns

Post by Db34 »

Anyone know any decent intermediate level jazz horns in the 1k range. I'm looking to buy my first personal horn and I've been playing trombone for three years. I like to play on small bore tenors with no trigger.

Does it have to be new? For your price point you can get an older pro model that will be an excellent jazz instrument.

For that matter, the Yamaha 354 many of us start on is a great jazz horn. Doug Elliott won his audition to the Airmen of Note on one.

Some older and discontinued models to consider:

Benge 170
Conn 4H, 6H, 10H, 12H, 24H, 38H, 40H, 48H (and many more). Even the old Director models work well.
Holton 65, 67, 69
King Tempo with curved bell brace
Martin Imperial, Committee (I'm playing a Martin Committee in my avatar)
Olds Super, Studio, Recording, Radio
Reynolds Argenta
Yamaha 651, 652 (any of the 65x models)

I'm sure there are more.

You could find a very nice king 2b or 3b in that price range that may or may not serve you for the rest of your life

Get yourself a nice used King 2b, 3b or a Conn 6h and you will have a top professional horn you can use for the rest of your life.

The 3B stands as the queen on the battlefield in my book. You can get it used in that price range, and you will love it.

3B is certainly a contender, but I would also consider 6h. There is I think at least one for sale here on TC for less than your budget. 48h is another solid choice. My personal favorite at the moment is a Getzen 3508 or the 1050 which is very similar. Very versatile, and you can get them used in your price range.

Do you think you could get me a link to the 6h? I've been looking around for one but need to be sure it's one I can trust will be in good playing condition.

I like my Bach 12.
Got it for A$900.00. Bought it having never played it!
Am I a trombone player who plays euphonium, or a euphonium player who plays trombone? :idk:

I agree with the others get a used King 2B 3B or Conn 6H 48H. All available in that price range. So much better than anything you’d get new in that price range.
I’m not a collector, I just have too many trombones….
King 2B. King 3B. King 3B+ w/F attachment and gold brass bell. King Duo Gravis. Getzen 1047FR. Conn 6H. Conn 48H.

Saw this one (and a couple others) on Reverb. https://reverb.com/item/77362522-conn-6 ... t=77362522

Nothing to add here. 6H, 48H or 3B or the Benge small bore if you can find it. I find 2Bs a little too small for some jazz stuff (especially more modern things).

I played lead on the Martin Committee (in my avatar). A colleague played lead on a Holton 67 Stratodyne (which I bought from his estate). Both cost under US$500 each.

I can also attest that the Jupiter XO horns and Carol Brass horns are very good. True, they don’t have the brand name appeal of King, Conn and Bach; but they’re still good and very well made. And they’re inexpensive. FWIW I have a Carol .508 (model 2209) in the classifieds.

On second thought, I may be mistaken. In any case, I was mistaken about your post count. Never mind.
