Thoughts on this eBay Edwards

Post by kaikitano »

I was just curious what the members of trombone chat have to say about this, how good (bad) of a deal this might be, etc.

I’m also curious about how much it would cost to have your own bell cut, with the parts and the tech’s fee and all.

Dependent valves is why it's sat so long

Dependent Thayers always looked nasty to me. Anyone else?

Yeah there is a reason that Edwards discontinued dep basses. Also, older Thayers are always a crap shoot.

What are you implying that reason is?

Surely its only been discontinued because of a lack of sales?

I think that's what he meant. However for all, and it's about 99% of bass trombonists who think you cannot have a career OR play the bass trombone with efficiency on dependent valves, check out Dave Taylor's career. I'm thinking he's done pretty well for himself.

Should try playing them…. I’ve played many sets, both independent and dependent… the dependent sets sounded better.

The difference could be seen as negligible, but it is enough that I’m still considering changing my last Thayer set to dependent.

Besides, I think the look is rather elegant with all the loops on one side of the bell.

Cheers,
Andy

That’s exactly what I was saying. They got maybe one order for a dep Thayer section a year. They couldn’t sell the B502D horns that were left over when the swap to ARs was made.
Dave Taylor is a monster and the exception that proves the rule.

I played an Edwards dependent axial setup for about 6 months. For my taste it was too heavy and also balanced strangely. It played great but I couldn't get past the weight and balance. This was despite using a bullet brace.

This could well be a very good horn. Though I'm not too keen on dependent valves myself, from the very little I've played them, I don't think that would be any major obstacle for playing and performing very well on it.

I do think that the asking price is high, though. $5100 is - to me - pretty steep for a used Edwards, however quasi-rare or well playing it may be. But to anyone willing to spend that money, or make a lowball bid, his own.
