88H LT

A friend just bought a used, early 1980’s vintage, Conn 88H LT. He’s wondering what the LT means and how it is different than just a standard closed wrap 88H.

LT is for the Elkhart style, thinned out bell. After the move from Elkhart, Conn started making heavier bells for the 88H, as standard. Think of it as the current 88HT.

I had a 90s 88H LT that was quite odd... The engraving on the bell was barely legible through that dreadful orange lacquer, and it only said

CONN 88H *lt*
USA

with no other crest design or anything else like a modern UMI era when they named them 88H O/W and whatnot. Just the text and numerals. Makes me wonder now if it was even a real 88. I remember, nobody, not even my teachers, could solidly slot a high D on that horn. Still have never seen any other example of that engraving!

Mine was an 88H LT OW, got it in 2000 new from a shop in West Chester, Pennsylvania whilst on tour as a tubist with a youth orchestra. I only went in to get a mute and just borrowed the horn off the wall to try the mute with!

I’m pretty sure it was from the late 90’s, was definitely a Gen II.

I’m 99% sure the LT was as said already, thin-walled bell.
