Looking for a Bass Trombone

Hey everyone, I am a highschool student that has been playing bass trombone for about 2 years now. I have been playing on a Olds P-24G from 1979 and I am looking for a upgrade. My budget is around 4.5k to 5k. I was looking at the Getzen 1052FD because of it's independent trigger system and interchangeable leadpipe. Are there any better bass trombones out there I could get for the price?

It's hard to beat the Getzen 1052FD. However, it's important to know what about the Olds is holding you back. If you can't pinpoint that, save your money and keep playing.

If you have a lessons teacher, you might want to ask them first.

I thought about this, but he seems to be looking for suggestions rather than offers.

I should point out that at your price point there are a lot of pro level used instruments that would be a good fit. A Benge 290, Conn 71H, King 7B, or Yamaha 613 should all be able to be found at your price point.

What condition is the Olds P-24G in? They are fairly nice horns, and I know some players who are very happy with theirs. A horn that old can however have issues with worn valves and oxidation inside the tubes that rob it of its best performance.

For a new horn, the other suggestions made are all solid ones. The Getzen 1052FD is a nice horn, and I have a friend who got one a few years back and LOOVES it. I know some people don't get along with them, but I've been very happy with my Yamaha YBL-830, and they also just put out a YBL-835 which some have felt is a very good horn. The shires Q series is also well regarded.

Are you going to be able to go and try out these horns, are you limited to what you can get shipped to you?

It's in ok condition. The valves are not super smooth because of rust(don't know how that got there). It was like that when I got it but It doesn't affect the consistency of the triggers. I'll look into the Q series. Thanks!!

The Q Series is pretty good. The only thing I've noticed in my experience is that switching out to custom parts has been iffy. I had a tenor where a custom tuning slide didn't quite fit, and a bass where the axial valves just kept gumming up despite cleaning and using proper oils.

Rust? So is orange colored stuff coming out? There is nothing in there that can really "rust", but the oxides formed by nickel silver can certainly be that color. Sounds like the horn needs a full cleaning if you are noticing anything "rust" like coming out of the valves.

If you're looking to move to something different from the P-24G, the possibilities are almost endless. If, on the other hand, you really LIKE the P-24G and just want something newer that still has the same essential character? I've been down that road, and it doesn't lead anywhere.

An upgrade might be as close as a tune up and cleaning at a good shop. Sounds like it's been a while.

I would agree. The P-24G definitely be a great choice for starting out, and in proper working condition should be a really good horn. I know a few guys on the FB group who play them and really like them. I'm not saying it would be a great choice for a pro player, but an example in good working condition should be enough to take an advancing student into their college years.
