The Munich Symphony Orchestra has appointed Joseph Bastian as its music director from next summer.

The Munich Symphony Orchestra is not to be confused with the Munich Philharmonic which spent 13 years trying to fire a trombonist.

If I remember correctly, I borrowed his contra 15 years ago, but never met him in person. I think some friends played in an amateur orchestra that he conducted.

There seems to be quite a few trombonists that become successful conductors at some point. Hermann Baeumer (former Berlin Philharmonic) comes to mind. And of course Christian Lindbergh.
