Is there such a thing as a small shank to medium/Euro shank adapter?

Post by Kingfan »

I have what I thought was a small to large shank adapter. I tried to use it and it literally rattled around in my bass bone and my large bore tenor. It's to big to fit in my small bores at all, so it isn't a small shank extender. Could it be a small shank mouthpiece to medium/Euro shank horn adapter? If so, it's up for grabs, I got no use for it.

From the shape of the thing I would have suspected it was a small shank to Conn ("Remington") adapter.

Yes, there are adapters to go from small shank to Euro shank. It's a rather small difference.

That looks identical to the one I have that I got from WW&BW back in the '90s.

my repairs man had turn off a small to large shank adapter, so it fits euro shank. Wall thickness will become very thin, so you must handle carefull
Perhaps a bit tape around the mouthpiece shank will also works

Looks just like the ones we had in college. Our tuba/euph studio owned a few of those old “pyramid valve button” Besson euphs with the satin finish. The kids coming in without their own horn would use them with small-Euro shank adapters like this.

My bargain basement micrometer shows 12.3mm/.48" at the tip, 14mm/.55" just below the hex on top. OK, is it Euro or Remington?

If it rattles around in a large shank receiver, it's medium shank. A remington adapter would fit but wobble.

It's roughly a medium shank but a little on the big side to fit properly

I got my micrometer from Harbor Freight, so dimensions may not be dead on accurate. Kinda like my playing :D
