I dropped my horn off for some slide repairs, and it'll be in for 3-4 weeks. What can I do to keep in shape while it's in there?

Drink a lot of tea

Buzz; either free or with your mpc (if you know how). Set a buzzing goal and try to make it. See what, if any, effect it has on your playing when you get your horn back. Maybe good (hopefully), maybe bad and maybe nada. But then you will know. I am planning on a 2-week vacation this spring, sans my horn. That's my plan while away; mpc-buzzing for two 10-minute sessions a day, with a set goal. I want to know.

It's a good idea to have a spare trombone slide (or a spare horn).

If you have a teacher or a friend with more than one horn, maybe ask to borrow one?

Don't do this if you'll be marching with it.

If you don't wanna sink any cash... why not work on your music theory, sight reading skills, ear training, arranging skills, what ever else there may be   

You need 5 horns to start.

Bass, tenor, and alto in brass.

Then you need to add tenor and alto in plastic (pBone) for just this problem.  I don't think they make a bass in plastic.

Then, add two more tenors so you have large, medium, and small bore tenors.

So 7 horns is the bare minimum.  Most people here have far more.  Tom Ervin probably has 70. 

One mouthpiece is plenty.  Either you need an adapter for the different shank size, or you need a modular 'piece like Doug makes so you can swap shanks.

For now, until you get to the point you CAN have more than one horn, this is the best advice yet in this thread.

You could also look into renting a horn for a month.  Shouldn't be too expensive for a straight tenor.

In our house, the answer to 'How many trombones?' is always N + 1.  (where N is the current number on hand)

The formula to count however your wife will know you've got one more is (((n+1)/n) - 1)/0.01. It answers the question "How likely she'll notice.  Maybe you'll get at away with it?"

The formula clearly shows it is much better to start a collection early, before you find a wife

I (at one time) had only one Trombone. I was playing a gig and the guitar player knocked it over and just south of the tuning slide the horn bent at a 90 degree angle.
The repair shop had it for over a month. Came back looking amazing but....
I had gigs to play. I borrowed a friends horn for the next night and then borrowed a school horn (I was a high school band director).
My wife and I sat down and we decided that I needed a back-up horn
I now have 10 so it`s not a problem anymore.

I'll also have to make sure to use this thread as evidence in convincing my wife that I need more horns

In all seriousness, I do plan on expanding to pick up an F-attachment tenor, but I want to prove to myself that I'm going to stick with it first. I'm just returning after 10 years away and I'm still adjusting to having to set my own goals in the absence of a structured group to play with.

Sounds like I should spend some time on the mouthpiece and get on some of the things davdud101 mentioned, though Amazon could put a pBone on my doorstep in 2 days...
