He sounds great on it. It looks very uncomfortable to hold, and ridiculously complicated to play to anywhere near that level.

I think the piston style rotary valve raven flumpnet looks and sounds more interesting though!

I like the rotary valves, and I also player the piano so I think I’d be ok with left hand valves. My regular valve technique is pretty good. I’d love it for real trills and clean embellishments. There’s a limit to how good a lip trill can sound as you get into the middle range and lower. Morrison sounds great on it, but he’d sound good on a garden hose! He’s a bit of a freak of nature, in the best sense.

I haven't played one, but there's definitely one here in Melbourne, Australia, or was until not too long ago. A young jazz guy was using one as his main horn, I think.

It can't be any worse than the Holton superbone, and actually looks pretty ergonomic to me.

I agree. I like the way you basically just hold it in the palm of your hand. Morrison talks about its good weight distribution.

I’m going to write to Thomann and see what their return policy is. I wouldn’t want to buy it and find out I really don’t like it and then be stuck with it. Although I’m sure I could dump it on eBay pretty easily. I’ll write to Schagerl too and see if they have, or plan to have, any U.S. distributors. I just thinking’s a very cool design and would be fun to play!

I've only played Schagerl at a show. The instrument was fantastic. Don't even remember which one it was, but it was great. They do suffer from the BAC syndrome a little, I think - a little showboat. Their pro horns in the US are overpriced, in my opinion, but they look great, and appear to be very well built. They do have intermediate and student horns that are less flamboyant.

Yeah, I could tell from the webpage there’s a bit of showboating going on. That’s ok though…it can be fun. Thanks for the info.
