Thank you for posting this! I'm so happy I chose the first movement of the Concertino for solo and ensemble last year (pre-COVID)!!

Best of luck to all who participate! :)

Btw, I'm not affiliated with Getzen or this competition at all. Just passing the info on to those who may be eligible.

Is it just me or is the David the most over played piece in history? Don't get me wrong - I like it and still practice it occasionally, but there has been a lot of music written since then. Why is that piece the one that so many auditions and competitions use?

It's like playing the Bolero solo in auditions. It ticks a lot of the boxes for demonstrations:

1. It was written for a trombone virtuoso and demonstrates the capabilities of the instrument.
2. The level of difficulty shows the sophistication and musicality of the player.
3. It is melodic enough not to turn off judges who don't play trombone.

I wish the orchestral arrangement was PD (it isn't) since most of the trombone students we audition for our Christmas spot featuring a student soloist want to play it.

It's a standard. You're expected to know it and play it at a very high level if you're an auditioning tenor trombonist.

OK, a correction. I just checked Luck's Music Library and the David Concertino orchestra parts are available to purchase. Next kid who wants to play it can. Last one I was unable to get the orchestra parts and the kid had to play the Morceau Symphonique (and did a great job on it).
