Bell-slide compabilities - my horns

Ok, I made a funny observation which triggered me to investigate my horns, and here is the compability list I came up with. Please feel free to add information:

Bell-slide compabilities I could check out (or can remeber in ???)

All my Yamaha have same nuts and threads, but there are three different tenon sizes, medium large, large and bass
It is possible to match a smaller slide with a larger bell if wrapping a 0.3 mm plastic or brass sheet around the tenon.

MEDIUM LARGE BORE BB/F TROMBONES

YSL 356G / YSL-446 / YSL-646 (M 20 x 1.0mm metric Feingewinde, tenon 16.0 / 14.8 / 32.5 mm)

Conn 78H / Conn 79H ?? what do these match in the Getzen world ??

LARGE-BORE BB/F TENOR TROMBONES

Sovereign BE944R / YSL-682G / YSL-682B (Bousfield) / YSL-543G (Allegro) / YSL-448G (M 20 x 1.0 metric Feingewinde, tenon 16.6 / 15.4 / 27.2 mm)
Sovereign tenon is only 20.6mm long, but fits large bore Yamahas anyhow, same threads.

Conn 52H / Conn GenII 8H 88H / Conn SL 525, 547 or 562 / vintage '68 Elkhart 8H 88H
( 25G Witworth ??, tenon 16.6 / 15.5 / 23.5 - 24.0 mm)

Large bore Getzen and Conn will work - but which ones ???

Large bore Bach and Edwards do work - but which ones ???

BASS TROMBONES

Also Conn SL 525, 547, 562 fits my bass bone Conn 112H and a borrowed Conn 72H (but slide is to short for 72H)
Probably do fit 60H 70H, 71H, 73H too ???

YBL-321 (M 20 x 1.0 metric Feingewinde, tenon 17.2 / 16.0 / 31.5 mm) - fits probably other Yamaha basses ???

Please feel free to add/correct of what you know fits together ..

Bach 42 slide fits my YBL-830 bass bell. Not perfectly, but playable. Tomorrow I shall try 50 slide.

Slides that I've personally tried with my Getzen 3047 and are 100% compatible:

Conn 88H - all iterations (at one time I had a full set of Conn slides w/leadpipes)
Getzen 725 - dual bore 0.525/0.547. tuning slide is also compatible
Getzen Canadian Brass large bore F-attachment (can't recall the model#. CB10?? CB20??). tuning slide also compatible
Blessing B-88/B-8 (large bore F-attachment/straight large bore)
Blessing B-7 (medium bore 0.525)

My Edwards bass slides fit my several Bach bass trombone perfectly, and I actually prefer them to the Bach slides. The Edwards slides also fit a Yamaha 421G Bell, will go onto my 613H, and the nut screws on, but I don't use this because the bell flops around. Edwards slides can be used on Shires bass trombone bells, and Shires slides can be used on Bach bells ( I don't have a Edwards bell section to check) but the lock nuts don't screw together properly.

Getzen bass trombone slides can be used on Conn, and probably the reverse.

Bach 36 and all small bore Bach slides will interchange but I don't see any point as I don't like the way these miss matched combos play. Bach small bore slide will fit Bach alto bell, and Bach alto slide will fit small bore tenor bell. in this miss match you get a trombone in C. the one with the tenor slide has 8 or maybe 9 positions, I can't remember, and a small sound. the one with the tenor bell and alto slide has a fuller sound but only about 5 positions is I remember.

many Bass trombones use similar receivers but different nuts, changing the nut or the tenon allows a swap. For Example, Bach, Edward, and Shires bass trombone slides all will fit into the receiver of an Holton bass trombone, but the nut won't screw down. You can change either the nut or the tenon and then they will fit together.

Shires and Bach/Edwards tenons will work, but aren't exactly the same. The threads are also different. I had to change out the tenon on my Shires dual bore to an Edwards part so it wouldn't flop over with my Bach bell sections.

Holton 180 slide fits my shires just different threads but the tenon is good enough to support double thayers without slipping

Bach 42 bell is interchangable with Courtois 3/3 (.547) or 2/3 (.527/.547) slide, and vice-versa. The tenon fits perfectly, but there is some variation on the thread comparability.
Bach 42 and Olds Opera are interchangable.
Yamaha 421 (single bass) will mate up with either a Bach 50 slide, or a Conn 72H - now I can't remember which! (Sold my son's 421. I think it was the 50; the Conn slide would probably be too long anyhow, and play flat)

Maybe I just got lucky as the three Edwards slides I have all fit the four Bach 50 bells I have. And that's a good thing as I prefer the Edwards slide on the Bach bass bell to the Bach slide! Possibly the amount of wear on the receiver and/or tenon could result in the bell flopping!

Well, my YBL 321 does NOT fit the Conn 72H slide, and others did report that Edwards and Bach bass slides are compatible, and YBL 421 fits Edwards.

So there seems to be evidence that your YBL 421 would mate with a Bach 50 slide .. not the Conn 72H slide

At one time I have a yamaha YBL 321 and a YBL 421G here at the house. The 421G would take Edward or Bach slides but the 321 would not.

I have played my 321 with a Bach 50 slide. It fits and grabs ok but the threads are different so you can't do the lock nut up.

I could do the same with a B&H Sovereign bass that I played for a while except the B&H has the nut on the slide so I ended up with two male threads looking at each other.

I have a YSL 641 which I think was discontinued in the 80s or 90s.

I also have an 820GII which is a current model.

Not only are the 641 and 820 slides interchangeable but the tuning slides are as well.

Yamaha manufacturing tolerances must be pretty good to be able to maintain that sort of fit over a few decades.

I had an Olds S-20 slide that fit my Kanstul 1662i. The tenon fit well, but the nut didn't screw on all the way.

Also, my 32h slide fit my 79h, but I don't think it played well.

The 79 and 78h slides are not really the same. The braces are in different places. The trigger on a 79h slides the hand position down the slide about 1/2 to 3/4 inch. You can put a 78h slide on a 79h, but it cramps your hand unless you have very small hands.

I play on a hybrid large bore tenor which is a Gen II 88H mated to a large bore Yamaha "Custom" slide. Works fine.

I also have an early Yamaha YSL-641bell section which also takes the Yamaha "Custom" slide but a Conn 88H slide fits but the bell locking nut will only go a little way onto the thread of the Conn slide. I do not understand that! :idk:

a little too loose may fit together but a little to tight won't!

What about tuning. Wouldn't switching a narrow slide out for a wide slide flatten the tuning?

my shires bell has always worked extremely well with bach slides for some reason.

Anyone know if the Yamaha YBL613 slide is compatible with the Yamaha YBL322?

It's not with the one I have. If you have a 322 bell and need to use the 613H slide I think you could order the slide receiver from a 421G, because I have a 421G bell that works with the 613H slide.

Bach 42 (early 80s) slide fits my Shires Tru-Bore bass (early 2000s) and my Shires dual bore bass slide fits my Bach 42.

Ok so my Bach 42 slide will go into my yamaha 322. it won't screw in and it wobbles but it vastly improves the sound of the instrument. Tuning wasn't affected very much which is suprising since the 42 slide is much wider amd longer then the yamaha. The other way around works horribly though. My slide needs to be replaced so I was thinking of getting a bach 50 slide. Unfortunetly I don't have one to try right now but I'll see if my teacher will let me try his whenever I see him next.

Here's an idea. Make a slide with a tenon that you can remove and switch out so you can use one slide with many diffeent bells

I believe BAC offered this for a while. Didn't seem to catch on at all.

I was led to believe that the large bore Conn (ex 8 / 88H) would be compatible with the Getzen 0.547 Eterna II (model 747). I picked up a new slide tenon / cork barrel from ConnSelmer for the SL2525. Nope! Does not thread up. The tenon taper is fine. What I've found is the Getzen is a metric 20mm x 1.0 nut. So same as Yamaha's noted above. But the Conn thread is larger diameter 20.4 mm (or 0.80"). Enough so the nut doesn't even want to start. Oddly the threads seem to be a metric 1.0 pitch on the Conn, but the diameter is non standard. Recording for posterity!

Have you thought about rethreading the Conn cork barrel with a 20mm x 1.0 die?
