P Faulise has a slightly different long tone exercise in that you play each note in straight, one valve and two valve positions. I find this to be quite a workout. Apart from the usual chops exercise, it helps locate some of those “out there” positions as well as intonation.

Yes, those "out there" and alternate slide and valve combinations can be very useful. I try to use this idea--practicing the different valve combinations--in other routines, exercises, and etudes.

I am so glad my college teacher got me to use the Faulise book as soon I entered his studio, it was my favorite to use all the alternates in ensembles and get pure confusion from the rest of my section.

I find the long tones played in open, valve and double valve positions a particularly good workout for the chops.

I studied with Paul in the early 80’s. I have tons of manuscript with more exercises than are in the published versions.
