FS: custom Yamaha 621 bass w/Rotax

Post by biggiesmalls » Wed Dec 04, 2019 11:24 am

This custom Yamaha bass was built as a collaboration between D.J. Kennedy and former Schilke horn builder Dan Truitt.

I traded with DJ to acquire this custom YBL-621 because it really punches far above it's weight. It just played circles around the two 321's DJ had in his studio. This horn is capable of expressing a broader range of tonal colors than I have come to expect from Yamaha horns.

The horn features a 621 bell section hooked up to a 322 slide with loose leadpipe. DJ played several 321/322 slides and selected this one as the cream of the crop. Dan pulled the leadpipe and gave the outers a custom satin finish. Action is 9/10 thanks to Dan's superb setup.

The big news is the brand new Rotax valve that Dan installed to take this horn to the next level. From the Willson website: "The Rotax air flow-through volume is a true 100% as compared to the 50%-70% flow through volume of conventional rotary valves.
This improvement found in the Rotax valve is still in a normal sized valve unit." The Rotax is a HUGE improvement over the original valve.

The result is something really special, a very versatile horn that's just a joy to play.

Some lacquer loss, spot lacquer, hand area pitting, and evidence of dent removal, but overall a very presentable horn.

$1450 shipped to CONUS. Includes serviceable original case.

Thanks

Wow, cool horn. Is that bell gold/red or yellow? I can't be certain from the photos.

Thanks for your time!

I can attest to the quality of Dan’s work, he was my go-to tech when I lived in Sacramento. Really performs magic on any slide. Very cool mods.

The bell material is yellow brass, but the vintage Yamaha lacquer has taken on a golden hue, so yes the color is a bit deceiving.

Before Dan moved to Sacramento, DJ and I would occasionally drive down to his place in Anna, Illinois and hang out in his shop while Dan worked his voodo on our slides. I always get compliments on Dan's slide and rotary valve setups. He's the real deal.

That is one sweet horn! I bet the Rotax made a world of difference too.
