FS: Holton TR183 Single Bass

Post by greenbean » Wed Dec 04, 2019 7:55 am

Here is a great playing Holton TR183 bass from 1978. Single-valve Bb/F bass, 9” red brass bell, great slide, good ergonomics and balance, and original case. $1000 shipped in the US.

What’s your opinion on whether this would be a good first bass for a tenor player?

Having played on one of these for my first bass as a tenor player, yes- and it will work great with a 1.5G. Also a great general-purpose option for "3rd trombone" bass parts that constitute ~99.85% of the orchestral repertoire, especially if any in your section use unsoldered bells.

Fair warning, lots of people find the valves on these very tight. I never found it to be that bad, it plays bigger than it looks...

I agree - great choice for a first bass!

And I also agree that the Holton valves look pretty small... but they work well!
