It's terrific..could be considered as a bit bright sounding but it was designed to be used with the Yeo mouthpiece.

Great slide, great valves, great response.

Great horn, one of the few I've owned and sold that I wish I never sold.

I think all of Yamaha's basses are among the best "stock" horns available.  Always easy to play and sound great up front.

I hit the LMS this aft to check out an 822 they had in.

I liked it. I don't know if I liked it $6000 worth.

That is unbelievably high.  One of the great things about Yamaha instruments is the "bang for the buck."  That sounds like the wrong kind of bang.

Good horns, but definitely meant to be played with a large mouthpiece. Very much like a large tenor with anything small.

I was pretty fond of my old YB 611.  well designed dependents and a good all around horn.

Who's charging 6K for one? Can be had for much less.

OP is Canadian. $6000 CAD = $4439 USD.

Also- It's a great horn. If I didn't already own a nice dependent bass, I'd get one of these as soon as I had the cash.

A friend had a 612 that I thought sounded very good.

The replacement appears to be a YBL-620. Except for an old review from Denny S, there is very little info out there about it.

Not sure what the 822 shares in common with the 830, but I've played one of those.  Very nice and beautifully built.

If you like the Yamaha you might really like the XO Brass 1242RL. Generally the XO Brass basses play very much like Yamahas (at least the XO 1240 plays like a Yamaha 830).  L&M sell them for $3200, but it may be hard to find one to play.   Image

I have to say I'm not totally knocked out by Xeno horns (tenors and basses).

The 822 is still in their Xeno line, isn't it?
