I told Art that whenever he wanted to sell them to me I would by them. He liked the way I played and he wanted his horns to go to someone who would use them. He sold me the 6 and 7 way to early. I sent him back the 7 and told him to send it back to me when he was done with it. We would talk every month or so. His wife sent the horn back to me after he passed on. I'd much rather have Art still around than the horn. He was a good man and a great player.

In case you're interested, Earl Williams Custom Trombones on Facebook has just posted John Noxon's interview with Jay Armstrong who, with his wife, was the Donelson, TN Williams trombone maker. You would have to "friend" Earl Williams Custom Trombones on FB but you might find it worthwhile.

the one on the far left is indeed larger. that one has a 9" bell while the one next to it has an 8.5" bell. i do have a 10 but it was one of the earlier ones that earl built so it looks more like a conn. no pics at the moment but i should have some this weekend.

I don't know how many times I've drooled over these pics on ur site! The only thing I can think of is John has mentioned before that the earlier model 10's were Conn like in appearance and that the later batch of 10's had the pigtail wrap.

Hi All,

I got my new 8 1/2" 8 bell from John Duda the other day. It plays fantastic.

Its purpose was to replace the 8" 8 bell that he made for me several years ago. A guy in Oregon took his Burbank 8 to John's shop to compare the the new bell to his horn and thought the Duda 8 1/2" bell was better than his. When I compared the new bell to my own Burbank 8, I have to say that I prefer the new bell, too. More complex overtones and it slots better (notes line up better as you go up the partials).

In comparing to the original Duda 8" 8 bell to the new 8 1/2", the partials of the new 8 1/2" bell line up much better as you go up the overtones (the 8" was a little flaky), and it sounds much bigger!!!

Love it, love it, love it.

Good to hear that he got it to you. It has been over half a year since I was down there when he showed me the bell and tuning slide. Is it raw brass still?

Hi Chris,

No, he lacquered it but there are lots and lots of swirl marks on it. I think John doesn't really like to finish his horns. I believe he feels that it sounds better without the lacquer, but I'm making all kinds of assumptions. I'm almost tempted to take the finish off but I hate to admit that I like shiny.

I know you play an 8 too so the next time you're in Hawaii, fly over to Maui and check out my Duda 8. I think you'll like it. Drew missed playing it by a week.

I'll try to shoot the pics this weekend. I've been thinking about where to take the shots because I'd like to put all my Williams in it to get a family portrait.

Besides, I also got the 9 bell but I need to play it more to get a feel for how it plays before I can comment on how it blows. (I've been too busy playing the 8 to put much time on the 9.) In other words, the jury's still out on the 9 but I think I'll take it to community band rehearsal tomorrow night. Anyway, pictures will be coming soon.

Hey, you're the expert in taking finishes off but still keeping the horn nice and shiny. Do you think the horns sound better without the lacquer?

No expert by any means, but wrights brass polish and elbow grease will take it off.

As for keeping it shiney

.... I use car wax (Turtle Wax).

Which sounds better?
I've had some sound MUCH better after removing lacquer.
Then again, I've had some that it didn't seem to make a difference.

I always leave the lacquer on, if it looks nice.
If the lacquer is "dead", I remove it.

One day, I'll send my 1st Williams to Kanstul - and get it re-lacquered.
Keeping the horns cleaned and waxed - is a chore (or labor of love, which ever way ya see it).

Thanks for your insights on the lacquer-no lacquer thing, T. I guess I'll keep it on. I really don't like to spend time polishing things. Heck, I haven't waxed my truck in like... Gee, seven years?!!!

Time flies when you're busy doing fun things.

On another note (pun, hee hee...) I took my new 9 to community band rehearsal tonight and let all the trombonists check it out, and I used it in rehearsal. But before I give you their and my verdict, let me explain how this horn came into being. Almost three years ago, i got a Calicchio Williams 8 from John Duda but he cut the bell flare to 8" instead of the usual 8 1/2". I ordered an 8 1/2" bell from him, which arrived a few days ago, the day before I got the 9, and it plays great; probably better than my Burbank 8.

What to do with the 8" 8 bell? It was also a great playing bell so I asked trombone tech and forum member John Sandhagen if he could put together a 9 for me built around this bell. He got Kanstul to build the wrap, including the pigtail, and put a CR valve on it. (John tells me that Kanstul had never made a .547" bore CR valve before so I guess my 9 is the very first, which is kind of fun.

) So I now have a 9 which isn't as warm as your typical Williams 9 and I think it's has a very versatile sound. Thank you so much for the great work, John.

So going back to the reaction of the trombone players in the community band. They all loved it. A couple of them have played all of my Williams horns and they thought that the 9 was perhaps the best blowing of the lot. I'm not sure that I completely agree with that but, for sure, I rank it way up at the top. I love the way it blows and I love the way it sounds. I definitely have a winner on my hands.

BTW, what I said earlier about this bell being a little flaky, that's still true. Compared to my other Williamses, I have to make some interesting adjustments to the positions to get the notes in tune. I'm quickly getting used to it, though, so it's not really a problem.

I'm thinking about maybe selling my Tennessee 4. I got it in 1990 when was in the Note, as my backup horn, and have hardly ever played it so it's in really good shape.

Early Williams (including the Williams-Wallace) horns with f-attachments were flat wraps. It's possible he saw a horn like this one and adopted a similar wrap. No way of telling.

This is a family portrait of my Williams trombones. From left to right: Duda/Sandhagen 9, Duda 8 1/2" 8 bell, Burbank Williams 8, Burbank Williams 6 (my original horn bought in 1971), Frankenbone Williams 6 assembled by John Sandhagen (Donelson bell, Duda parts, King 2B+ slide tubes), Burbank William 4. I play all of these horns, going from one to the other as my moods strikes me, but my favorite two are the Duda 8 1/2" 8 bell with Duda 8 slide, and the Frankenbone 6. Both are very easy to play with great response and great tonal range.

Here's a picture which includes (left to right) the Duda/Sandhagen 9, Duda 8 1/2" 8 bell, and my Burbank 8. The Duda/Sandhagen 9 is made of a Duda 8" 8 bell, a Kanstul-made wrap with a CR valve, and was assembled by forum member John Sandhagen. John has told me that the .547" CR valve was the first one of it's bore than Kanstul had made. The slide on the 9 is also used on the Duda 8 bell and I just swap it back and forth as needed.

The Burbank 8 is the horn I first fell in love with when I went to the Burbank shop back in 1971, but Bob Williams recommended I buy the 6 since I also played in jazz band. I've never regretted following his recommendation but I'm happy that I finally have a Burbank 8.
