Well, that could start a whole other discussion about cultural roots of diet. But I'm not responsible. I'm from the north and have just lived here for about 40 years (come to think of it, that's more than half my life ). I just try to get along and fit in. But I do draw some lines. I won't eat "country ham" -- at least not any I've ever seen. And I haven't gone for the whole deep-fried turkey yet. But life is short. Why make it also intolerable without bad food? In terms of donuts, I might have one every few months -- and then definitely not a Krispy Kreme -- or any other donut with "stuff" on it.

If you must compare them to donuts, I guess compare them to Atkins Farms Cider Donuts from Amherst MA. Those are good.

Or maybe LaMar's original sour cream donut. That one is also good.

Blinkie's Donuts in Woodland Hills makes the best donut out there. Only open until noon, so you have to have a reason to be in Woodland Hills in the morning (not a common occurrence).

You know, I believe you about that but do they have any less "flashy" donuts? All the pictures I found are of donuts with heavy icing and are blasted with breakfast cereal. That's not my jam. They make any like this?

At least the locust bean gum is not (apparently) related in any way to locusts. I thought for a moment that it might be an attempt to add some insect protein to the product, in order to increase its nutritional content.

Shires is like Jaguar in some ways. It's a brand that used to have a lot of swagger, but it has been sold to people who don't and really can't value the style and history. It used to be a premium brand, but now it's devalued in large part by its ubiquity. Remember when Jaguar relabeled a Ford Taurus? We don't really have to go through the faults of the communist Chinese government or its tightly managed economy and its relationship to intellectual property law again to understand why Chinese ownership itself devalues any brand.

Those "flashy" doughnuts seen to be the style these days. I think part of it is that you need something that has visual "pop" for social media. Much as I love a good "Old Fashioned" doughnut, they don't look particularly impressive.

They have both flashy and non-flashy. The flashy ones are what get the attention, but their simple donuts without any nonsense on it are my favorite ones they make. (I like flashy donuts too, so I win no matter what I get. I usually get a nice mix of simple and flashy.)

And "Krapfen" is regional (mostly southern German, in particular Bavaria). There are many other names for "doughnuts" in Germany. For example: "Pfannkuchen" or "Berliner". Most popular is simply "donut".
