ATW Tbn Soloist with the Army Blues.

Post by Pre59 »

Am really enjoying the whole approach of this soloist playing "Just Friends". Anyone know his name and background, and the horn looks like a 2B of some kind?

John Allred. I watched it live on Youtube. Great playing.

The whole bone section for the Army Blues is new in the past few years. A bunch of guys retired and they have a bunch of new young guys in there that I guess will probably stay together for 20 years. The Airmen of Note have a reputation for being the best service jazz band, but I think these guys are just as good.

John doesn't play "Just Friends" it's the guy sitting on 3rd in the section ........ If you watch to the end of Just Friends they announce his name. I'm not gonna say just to make you watch it again ;-) Awesome playing from all involved.

The guy on lead bone is on loan from the Airmen of Note, note the different uniform! Ben Patterson.

Rare to hear a guy with time as good as his. He waits and works with the rhythm section--feel the rhythm section welcome him into the time.

Yes, I found Erin Eckert as a member of the Eastman Trombone Choir 2015,

When I used to play a lot of Double bass, there where not that many horn players around with that level of groove, even some of the really good ones. It's what I think of as the "hello guys" moment, we're locked in, good to go..

It's actually Aaron Eckert. VERY fine jazz trombonist. Hope he enjoys his career in the Army.

Everyone in the Army Blues was great. It was really nice to see the program allow each trombone player get a chance to shine, too.

....and I noticed that the bass tbn had a nice blend with the two tenors during the solo.

For some reason it sounds like he's playing into a fan... there's a lot of cracking on the track. Anyone else get this?

Yes. Unfortunately, the audio in the clip doesn't reflect the audio live.
