I've known Med Flory as musician for a number of years but when I was a kind he used to show up as an actor on shows like Andy Griffith and Gomer Pyle and in a couple of movies.  Always seemed to play a real hick.  But hes a fantastic musician.  I believe he was responsible for Supersax, yes?  Gotta love YouTube.

Just wondering what being able to sing a melody has to do with getting head shots, getting a manager and getting gigs?

Quote from: LX on Apr 16, 2008, 11:34AMChip and all,

Here are more clips from the same Steve Allen show...I am thinking they are from around '82 or '83. I'll ask around...it's basically Terry Gibbs' band. He was Steve Allen's music director for many years.

All these things have a "tv" sound quality to them [bad balance, weird mix, many will find the electric bass annoying--but do check out his LINES!!] and the tune choices are all about prime time [ie, rather pedestrian and corny!], but as it is with this kind of thing...there are still lots of good things to hear and enjoy here anyway!

To answer your questions about players, Chip. Here are my guesses...

Chuck Berghoffer on bass

I think it might be John Leys on bass bone.

The other ww's are Gus Bivona [2nd alto and flute] and one of my former mentors, the late Bill Green on bari and flute.

Here is Plas Johnson playing his "signature tune", "Pink Panther". Check out Pete C's typically sassy lead trumpet on the bridge.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBupII3LH_Q&feature=related

And Sarah Vaughn and the band's in the pocket version of "Just Friends"!!! Nice chart--might be Broadbent's...?

Bone files: check out a fleeting but VERY good example of Charlie's trademark lead bone playing behind Med's alto solo around 1:47! I'd bet big bucks the tiny fall he puts on that F on the "and" of two in the fourth bar was NOT marked!  Image.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPBqNDjFTj8&feature=related

LX

PS...

===SOAP BOX ALERT===

Incidentally, the only "scatting" SV does here is on a unison line around :52 [insert sigh of relief here  Image], but her ability to improvise on the melody and lyrics is so deep. Why is this element so foreign to so many of today's prominent jazz vocalists?!?!

Wow,LX!

Those names bring back a lot of memories! Image Image Image

(Up in Heaven,my mom's envious right now...she knew a lot of those cats from the old days! WOW!)

Here's an awesome Dick Nash video of him playing "I Cover the Waterfront".  I don't know if someone posted it already, 31 pages is where I draw the line, so please don't throw a fit if someone already did.

Now, now cousin! Image But yes, I prefer a more exciting ride myself.

I am a bit hesitant to put this one up now. Image But I am always searching for recently added videos of my favourite Roy Williams and this one is new-ish. Forget the vocal from Roy, because the trombone solo is very typical of his style - although he plays according to the company he is in. The tune is “I’m Crazy ‘Bout My Baby” - warts an' all! I must say they went to a lot of trouble providing the excellent historical information about Fats Waller.

Although I don’t like the term, I suppose we must still call the style Traditional Jazz. These days you can hear this kind of jazz played all over the world. Historically, I guess it comes out of the Eddie Condon 50s style. Many of the British and American bands turned to this more mainstream approach in the mid 60s.

So, throw out your tubas and banjos and get with it! I have done just that with my band.

What, and end up sounding like every other contemporary trad and mainstream band in the world? All playing the same instruments and the same damn tunes? Utter boredom. No thanks.

However, I enjoyed the track. At least, I would have, late at night at a jazz festival after a number of beers.

I hear ya, RHM, but my experiences with the traditional bands is that they have a very slavish approach to their craft, and seem to have memorized Louis Armstrong's every step and meal from about 1925 to 1928, let alone his cornet breaks, which they insist on playing, note for note...now if that isn't utter boredom, I don't know what is!

Nice tune Dave. "Out Of Nowhere" changes and you're stretching it in the good way. Were the drums and organ in the same room? I find the isolation thing really challenging, but you guys cruise through it nicely. The horns are tight on the head and lock with the rhythm section pretty nice for the blowing.

isolation for me and julius.  jared and dion were in the same room, but the organ amp was in a different room.  therefore, organ was only audible via headphone mix.  it was not an ideal situation.  we did the whole session in just over an hour.  we got four complete takes in that time.  it could have been even more if the studio techs had been more prepared for our situation.  but, they do these sessions all the time and have different size groups and instrumentation.  i gave them the information, but they were finishing a session with a punk rock band immediately prior to our session.  once again, not ideal, but we made the best of it.

glad you like the tune.  i hope you can feel the vibe.  we just did a hit at fat cat and the vibe was stong.  this friday we'll be at cecil's and then thursday may 1st at small's.

Yup very well thought out solo.
This is Mark's kinda setting. I had him play a small club here a few years ago with a local cream rhythm section.
Man i wish someone had recorded it........ 3 one hour sets and he just got stronger and stronger!!!!!

Check out Teagarden's range of sounds on this:

Listen at around 2:23 to around 2:50, if someone captures the blues better on trombone, or has a better command of time, you let me know who that person is!

That "If He Walked Into My Life" arrangement, including most of Jigg's solo is a representation of Urbie Green's LP from years back, which I have. Wonder why they
reproduced it? Great imitation of Urbie by Jiggs.

Doug and I have discussed this topic and he has become a devotee of the David Baker "How to Play Bebop" volumes.  The last time we discussed it was a week in Tokyo and was followed by a performance at IAJE (rip) in Toronto.  Doug proudly displayed his copies of volumes 1, 2 and 3 to David, who was there.

What can I say?  I'm taking in this beautifully produced footage of a great band full of so many great soloists, and I come to Doug's solo on Manteca and it's simply embarrassing.....but I'm glad to hear he's addressing the issue after so many years.

The last time I heard him solo with the VJO back in 98 or 99, it was about as uncomfortable as I've been listening to a pro band - same scenario with great players, soloists....oops, here comes a novice-level bass bone solo in the middle of all this greatness!

Obviously a sore subject - unpaid commissions from back in my past life as an agent....combined with a embarrassingly bad solo.....and you get a cranky, belligerent CT.  OK, enough of the dark side....

I judged at a HS big band contest about 4 or 5 years ago, and they had the clinicians play a short set at the end. We did Autumn Leaves and (I think) A Train. Doug held his own, and played better than his own protesting comments would have led you to believe.
