Valve repair

Post by ttf_Ellrod »

A couple of weeks ago I asked about lubricating the second valve on my bass trombone. Thanks for the replies.

Today, I'm having lunch, killing time, waiting for my horn to be repaired.

I bought my Yamaha bass about 6 weeks ago. Used but in perfect shape except for a sticky 2nd valve. I told the vendor, a large chain of music stores, that I'd buy the horn but they'd have to clean and lube the second valve. Deal. They had their tech attend to it.

Except the valve remained intermittently sticky. Today, I left it with the local master. He disassembled the valve and showed me how it was a little funky. Some tarnish, a bit of buildup on the spindle. He told me he'd look after it right away (and look at valve #1 as well) and it'd be done in a couple of hours. Couldn't ask for better service.

Good.  I'm glad there's a good guy in Vancouver.  Let us know how it works out.

So far, so good.

Tak (the tech) and I agreed that the horn likely sat for a long time (Yam's Canadian rep told me he orders the nickel slide, not the brass one that came with my horn, suggesting an older horn. The D slide was frozen when I tried it out. Probably just sat in a warehouse for a long time).

The invoice referred to a "refit".

I have the same horn and I LOVE the valves.  Yamaha knows how to make valves, that is for sure!  Once you get this issue cleaned up, you should be good for a long time.

So far, the valve is working fine.

It's taken a bit to sort out a mpc. I've settled on a Bach 1 and 1/4 that seems to hit the G (Goldilocks) spot.

My 612 seems to work best around there as well. A laskey 85MD works quite well.
