Before Olds - What brand Lead-Pipe did Mr. Roberts use is his 70H

Post by TheConnArtist70H »

As everyone already knows George played started his Bass trombone success playing his Conn 70H.

I have 2 of these but don't use the Original Lead pipes they came with, I use my 1969 Conn 62H Lead-pipe
which works perfect for Ballad playing with my DE mouthpiece set up with K8C shank which sits right deep in side and none of my other Lead-pipes will thing will touch it i.e. ( Brad Close's Bach MV50 - Bert Herrick or Kanstul Commercial ).

Does anyone know if George used the original 70H, or I believe he may have used a Bert Herrick Lead-Pipe to go
with his Herrick mouthpiece.

Reaching out....... ( John L / Fridge )

Also - What happened to these pieces when George passed.

Thanks, Al :good:

I'll just say that at that time Minnick was probably the ONLY person messing around with leadpipes at all. But I don't know the answer.
EDIT: Herrick, I suppose may have actually originated that idea

George was playing stock stuff for a long time. He showed up in LA long before Minick was doing any of that I'm pretty sure.

Just a guess but I agree with the posts above. Lead pipe swapping was not a thing then so probably the original pipe.

Thanks for all your feedback.

I do recall an article where George said he took his Lead-Pipe with him everywhere which suggested he had
a favourite, it could maybe linked with when Reg at Olds decided to make one for him when he wanted George's
name on his Pro-Level horns i.e. the P22 Variants.

BUT.. something tells me Bert Herrick ( in Georges earlier years ) may have made him a special Lead-pipe as well as the oversized 1.5g he made which George loved and this would perhaps be well before Larry started messing around. Who knows.

I'll keep searching :good:
