Jazz Bassbone solos
What are some of y’alls favorite jazz bassbone solos? Been looking for some things to listen to and possibly transcribe something low.

OK, another one...
First of all, listen to this, not because of a bass trombone solo, but because of Gary Valente. I call his solo "The Note." You'll see why. The Note contains all notes, maybe even all sounds in the universe.
Then listen to this from the same album. And then listen to the rest of the album, and everything else you can get your ears on from Carl Bley.

A classic "whole bone section improvises" chart - practically the only time the 4th bone gets changes. Kudos to the guys who make it sound this good!

Re: Jazz Bassbone solos
Tom Cubik write so good for bass trombone, and of course the entire big band. Had to step in for a big band some weeks ago and admit I was sweating a little bit when his compositions and arrangements came up. Don't think I made it justify.
But so fun to play.
Thanks for the video!

Rainy Day in Rio by Goff Richards, and Concerto for Bass Trombone by Chris Brubeck have a latin-jazz flavor, two of my favorites.

Wonder who's in the trombone section on the Kubis "Bill Bailey" recording? Bass trombone may be Rich Bullock.TomInME wrote: Thu May 21, 2026 1:54 pm A classic "whole bone section improvises" chart - practically the only time the 4th bone gets changes. Kudos to the guys who make it sound this good!
In any case - WOW!

"After an opening piano solo by the amazing Jack Reidling, this tune features another blazing a
capella section and solos by all four trombonists - after I honk away, world class players (and old
friends) Andy Martin, Charlie Morillas and Alex Iles try to keep up with me (yeah, right!). It is always a
pleasure and a privilege to be in the same section with them!"

Re: Jazz Bassbone solos
Bill Reichenbach’s solos, particularly in his recordings with Michael Davis, are worth listening to.
