Mouthpiece Scans/Comparisons
Does anyone know if there is anyplace that has comparisons for mouthpieces with scans of the cups? I know there are a lot of comparison charts as well, but they don’t all do well when describing the cup and the slight differences on where the mouthpiece is measured.
Thanks
Thanks

I don't know how other manufacturers feel about this, but please don't rely on this for my stuff, I have the models live on my side showing the internal contour 3 dimensionally.Baribone wrote: Thu May 07, 2026 8:46 pm Does anyone know if there is anyplace that has comparisons for mouthpieces with scans of the cups? There shouldn't be any difference between the 2D profile and a 3D representation of a spun part.LIBrassCo wrote: Fri May 08, 2026 2:59 am

The 3D models do look cooler though!

What I'm saying is a scan may or may not be accurate, my models are what I literally use to cut my parts.

Vennture has a bunch of models integrated into venncad, which is free software you can download. You can also send mouthpieces to them for scan and they'll send you venncad files of the scan.

I have not yet had any of my mouthpieces scanned, but many of my colleagues have. One thing they all have in common is that the recreations they got done were never close to as the originals.

I'd wager that the difference is, amongst other things, due to the blank being different and neglecting or not accurately matching the shank engagement / tip diameter.RustBeltBass wrote: Sat May 09, 2026 4:35 pm I have not yet had any of my mouthpieces scanned, but many of my colleagues have. I've tested internally identical mouthpieces with different blanks that I've made, and engagement depth changes, and both make a huge difference.

Re: Mouthpiece Scans/Comparisons
1. Human error in scanning
2. Human error making a mouthpiece
If it were identical it would play identical. The vast majority of companies can't make two that are the truly identical, much less someone with midnight inspiration to try and make some. Just sayin.

Re: Mouthpiece Scans/Comparisons
The copy (actually, two copies) I had made by Jim New of one of my pieces are indistinguishable on my face from the original and from one another
I suppose the accuracy is multifactorial.
