Alright - Okay - You Win ( Dick Noel and the Academy Brass - Solo DINDI )

Post by TheConnArtist70H »

Don't know if anyone else has this special Album at all, I have had mine ( LP ) for a long time which has this beautiful tune titled "DINDI" played by the great Dick Noel.

This album has a total of 12 Tracks. All Trombones with a great Rhythm/Percussion section, with Bud Shank of course.

Tenor Trombones:- Dick Noel - Billy Byers - Charlie Loper - Lloyd Ulyate - Milt Bernard - Dick McQuay - Ernie Tack - Joe Howard.
Bass Trombones:- George Roberts - Ken Shroyer

Well worth a listen if you can locate on YouTube.
Old School - I just love it. :good:

I'm 99% positive this is Kenny Shroyer playing the Bass part starting on a lovely velvet Low C which is so
well in tune.

I know Kenny played a Conn 70H Single for most of his playing career, but cannot help think this was played on a Double valve Bass, I'm sure I recall Max Pirone saying that Kenny had one of his singles ( maybe The 70H ) modified with a Holton 180 Valve section ?

This eats away at me everytime I listen to this great piece, so if anyone out there who were close, or worked
with Kenny could please put me out of my misery....

Actually One of the Pics I do have does show a double valve which may back up Max... OR could
this be a 73H ?

Thanks, Al

The horn pictured in Old Photo 3 is not a 73H. It appears to not be a TIB and doesn’t have a reinforcement on the crook. If it is a 73H, it has been heavily modified.

Oh great. Another recording I need to track down.

The big band I'm in is playing the Nestico arrangement of the title piece in our performance coming up on Saturday. 8-) The Trombone 4 part is not particularly inspiring, but it's a really nice piece overall.
