Cat water fountain recommendations?

Post by AndrewMeronek »

Cat owners: do you have a cat water fountain and if you do what do you recommend? I have gone through 2 different brands and they both have sucked in different ways: a motor sprouting a leak and super-corroding and destroying itself; and the water reservoir just getting really nasty pretty quickly and being not super easy to clean.

Just turn on the faucet on the bathroom sink. :-)

My cats loved to drink out of the sink.

I ran into similar problems and have resorted back to just using a bowl.

I'm leaning toward this.

Went through the same thing with the fountain molding really quickly. Make sure your water bowl is very wide so their whiskers don’t touch as some cats are sensitive to that.

I tried a fountain with my cat but she seemed to never use it unless i lured her to it.

She prefers drinking from the bathtub faucet. If there were a button that would temporarily turn that on for five minutes so I wouldn't have to remember to turn it off, that would be ideal.

We have four cats and they all love:

Wonder Creature Cat Water Fountain with Stainless Steel Lid

We got it from Amazon. Every once in a while change the filter and clean out the reservoir.

Mine like to try to drink milk from my cereal bowl - while I am eating the cereal.

I use the stainless steel petlibro one. I disassemble, clean with hot water and soap, and change filters about once a month and its been great for a few years. The only issues I have ran into are 1. the downspout - being injection molded - can get "discolored" from stuff living inside the walls of the tube but the manufacturer will send you extras if you email them. I bought a handful for just a few dollars each and change it once a year. and 2. the motor stopping if I don't fully disassemble and clean it frequently enough. Yes, I also have problems with hard water buildup but that would be an issue regardless of the product and I knock some off with a screw driver during the cleanings. Its also a little tricky to disconnect the lid from the tank but hitting the tank with my knuckle while holding the spout is always enough to dislodge it. You can also order replacement pumps from the company if yours breaks (or just use a 3rd party pump? its a very straight-forward product).
