Ian McDougall RIP

Sad day today, as Ian McDougall has passed away at age 87.

For those of us who knew him as a teacher, mentor, friend, we could write a book full of 'Ian-ism's'.
Great seriousness and great sense of humour which came through in all aspects of his music creating.

A truly wonderful person who lived music, and was as great a composer/arranger as he was trombonist.

There's a lot of internet information about Ian, his lead trombone playing with The Boss Brass, and much more.

RIP Ian.....and as you'd say: "Cheers!"

Not a day goes by without remembering something he said... whether it was reprimanding me to 'Blow..damn it!' during a lesson, getting me some sub-work and some hints on what I was in for, in pondering the state of the world at the time, his showing off his wife's photographs, talking about his kids, playing Curling with the other Toronto musicians on Saturday mornings, his thoughts about composing and advice on what I should focus on, etc.....and mostly, as Ian would say: "Cheers!"

One of my favorite players and a true gentleman. I loved sitting in a section with him, always a fabulous time.

I met/heard him live a few times and my favorite was hearing him play with his trio - trombone, guitar and bass. Just a classy group - lots of ballads and standards. What a great ballad player he was -much like Urbie or Dick Nash.

He was a funny man too - lots of great quotes. One friend shared this one - "The two worst things to happen to music are electricity and Andrew Lloyd Webber".

(about the late great Jerry Johnson who died a way too young): "Jerry should be the principal trombone of the Toronto Symphony (in the '80s). And he may even be a better bass trombone player than he is on tenor" (he really admired Jerry)

(upon showing up for a lesson after Ian had me sub in a big band that played all the Dorsey charts, which was a super challenge for me at the time):
"The band leader phoned me and said you didn't use enough slide vibrato. He's an idiot! Just play the notes and move your slide around....if it sounds like crap he'll never even know!...he only cares what it looks like!"
