I'm really liking the Griego Markey 87 with my Yamaha 830 for just about everything I play, except sometimes I wish I had a bit more edge and immediacy to the sound, such as for more Band and Jazz oriented playing. I do really like the rim size and feel, and I believe the GP mouthpiece has pretty much the exact same rim as the Markey 87, but the cup is smaller and a different shape. I also noticed that now the GP comes in a "regular" weight, probably the same blank as the Markey, and also a "lightweight", which I can't even find a picture of.
Does anyone have any experience with the GP lightweight and how it differs from the regular weight?

The GP has a very different rim from the Markey 87. Larger inner diameter and completely different shape.

Why not get a 87 lightweight? I used to have one. It can be easily ordered from Griego.

GP has a very, very rounded rim. It's... not the same as the Markey.

Do they offer those in the lightweight blank?ZacharyThornton wrote: Tue Jan 13, 2026 7:03 pm Why not get a 87 lightweight? I used to have one. It can be easily ordered from Griego.
Anyway, I ended up going for a LW GP after emailing Griego, so I'll let everyone know how it works out once it gets here.

They do. I had one and sold it. Worked well but I use my 87 for bigger playing. My 85L is amazing.

Yeah, I got it, and it definitely is different, at least I think it is. The rim is rounder than the Markey 87 but I'm not really sensitive to things like that so it worked well. I'm playing a program that I want to have a brighter sound for. I tried my Marcinkiewicz EBT2 but it was TOO much zing. This seems to be a nice midway point.ZacharyThornton wrote: Fri Jan 16, 2026 10:00 am They do. I had one and sold it. Worked well but I use my 87 for bigger playing. My 85L is amazing.

Yeah the 87 is still going to be a way “darker” sounding piece than a GP.
